Weekend Watch: NLL Season Kicks Off

The 2012 National Lacrosse League season begins on Sunday when the Calgary Roughnecks visit the defending league champion Toronto Rock at Air Canada Centre.

The Champion's Cup will be on hand, and fans can up close and personal with the trophy, which the Rock secured in last seasons NLL final against the Washington Stealth, during a fan fest that begins two hours before the 6 p.m. local game time.

The Rock will also raise their championship banner prior the game.

One of the biggest story lines entering this season for Toronto is NLL Hall of Famer Bob Watson will not be in net. Enter Matt Roik, acquired via trade from the Stealth in July. Fans and opponents will be keeping a close eye on how Roik handles stepping in for a Rock icon.

Calgary finished 2011 with a league-best 11-5, but fell in the postseason to Washington in the Western Conference final. How will they start 2012?

Toronto-Calgary is the only game on the Week 1 NLL schedule. The slate really gets going next weekend.
