Monster's Kids Helping New York Disaster Relief
On Thursday we announced our 2012 Lacrosse Magazine Person of the Year, Federation of Interntional Lacrosse (FIL) director of development Tom Hayes. The title is more than well-deserved, as you can read here, here and here, and in Matt Forman's in-depth feature story in the December issue of LM. It was a great choice.
While we're at it, a former LM Person of the Year, Tim Goettelmann (2010), is continuing to prove that he was a great choice as well.
Goettelmann — the former Long Island Lizard who earned POTY in part for launching Monster's Kids, a charity to help sick children at Cohen Children's Medical Center on Long Island — is still at it, turning his attention to relief in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.
Even before the storm, Goettelmann, a Long Island native, had planned his annual Monster's Kids Holiday Cocktail Party to benefit the foundation. He made sure all his friends and family knew, sending out regular email reminders.
But then just last week, after Sandy, a note landed in my inbox that said about the Dec. 7 event, "In light of the tragedies that have occurred in Rockaway and Breezy Point [N.Y.], Monster's Kids has decided to donate a portion of the money raised to the Breezy Point Cooperative Disaster Relief Fund. All other monies raised will go towards helping the children of Cohen Children's Medical Center."
"What a few weeks it has been," said Goettelmann, who lives in Garden City, N.Y. "I hope most of you are back on your feet — heat, electricity, hot water!!! This kind of disaster really highlights what is important in our lives — our families, friends & neighbors!!!"
