Loyola Adds UNC Transfer Layne
from press release
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse team will add midfielder Chris Layne for the 2012 season, head coach Charley Toomey announced.
"Chris makes a great addition to our program," said Toomey. "We're excited to have him."
Layne will likely take the field in 2012.
Layne, of Downington, Pa., turned in two impressive years playing 29 games at the University of North Carolina. Layne tallied five goals and two assists while recording seven ground balls in 2010 after scoring a goal and collecting 11 ground balls as a freshman in 2009.
Ranked the No. 38 recruit by Inside Lacrosse coming out of Malvern Preparatory School in 2008, Layne led Malvern to Pennsylvania state lacrosse championship in 2006 and 2005, 2007 and 2008 Inter-Ac league titles. He also earned Under Armour All-America honors in addition to receiving EPSLA all-state laurels twice and all-Inter-Ac honors three times.
Layne's brother, Steve, starred at Loyola on defense from 2007 to 2010. Steve earned All-ECAC First Team honors and was named the team's Most Valuable Player last season as a co-captain.
"We're happy to welcome the Layne family back to the program," Toomey said.
Loyola opens its season at the Ridley Athletic Complex against Navy on Saturday, February 19, at 2 p.m.
