Rutgers Downs Wagner 17-5 in Opener
from press release
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (1-0) opened its 2011 season with a dominating 17-5 victory over the Wagner Seahawks (0-1). The game saw nine different Scarlet Knights score, with four posting multiple goal efforts. Redshirt freshman Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) led the way for RU with seven points on four goals and three assists.
RU set the pace early and got on the board less than a minute in when Mike Diehl (Flemington, N.J.) found the back of the net to give Rutgers a quick 1-0 lead. By the end of the first, Rutgers had pushed its lead to 4-1 behind goals from Nick Zerrillo (Brewerton, N.Y.), Will Mangan (Maplewood, N.J.) and Scott Klimchak.
The second quarter began with another quick Rutgers goal as Zerrillo netted his second of the game just 1:30 into the frame. Zerrillo’s goal seemed to spark RU as they rallied off the next four goals to push its lead to 9-1. After a Wagner goal cut the lead to 9-2, the Scarlet Knights responded with a goal from Mangan just 16 seconds before the half.
Rutgers came out strong after the break using another quick goal, this time from Kevin Hover (Belle Mead, N.J.), to continue its momentum. Less than a minute later Zerrillo put the Scarlet Knights on the board again giving RU a 12-2 lead, which they would push to 15-2 going into the final period.
Despite the fact that Wagner outscored RU, 3-2, in the fourth, the Scarlet Knights were able to walk away with a 17-5 victory. Joe Donnelly (Newton Square, Pa.) picked up the win in net for RU.
Rutgers will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 20, when they welcome Manhattan to the RU Turf Field for a 1 p.m. contest.
