McKee Scores Six in Air Force Victory

from press release

DENVER, Colo. - Led by six goals from freshman Tommy McKee (Holt, Mich.), the Air Force lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season, defeating Manhattan, 16-10, Saturday in the opening game of the Pioneer Face-Off Classic, hosted by the University of Denver.

The Falcons (0-2) got on the board with a goal from senior Zack Carroll (Freehold Township, N.J.) just over two minutes into the game, while McKee scored just six seconds later after a face-off win by classmate Erik Smith (Golden, Colo.). While Manhattan (0-4) scored the next two goals to tie the game, Air Force closed out the opening period with four unanswered scores, including the first career goals from McKee.

In the second period, the Falcons again scored first, with Mike Crampton (Fr., Kinnelon, N.J.) connecting on an assist from Michael Curran (Fr., North Brunswick, N.J.). However, the Jaspers outscored the Falcons, 3-0, over the remainder of the period to cut the margin to two goals at the half.

After the break, Manhattan was able to get within a point, as Tyler Jarvis tallied his third goal of the game less than a minute and a half into the third period. Carroll was able to break the Falcons' scoring drought, finding the back of the net with an assist from Vinny Sandtorv (Sr., Centereach, N.Y.) at the 8:46, while Smith followed with another goal just nine seconds later. Air Force closed out the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 13-6 advantage into the final stanza.

The Falcons' lead grew to eight when junior John DeBonis (Sayville, N.Y.) scored just 12 seconds into the fourth quarter. While Manhattan outscored Air Force, 4-3, in the final period, it was not enough to overcome the Falcons' highest scoring output of the season.

Air Force outshot Manhattan, 45-27, for the game, and turned in a dominating performance at the face-off X, winning 21-of-30 face-offs.

In addition to McKee's six goals, Smith finished with five points (1g, 4a), while winning 13-of-17 face-offs. Crampton added four points (3g, 1a), while Carroll (3g) and Sandtorv (2g, 1a) finished with three points each.

The Falcons close out the weekend's action tomorrow with a contest versus Jacksonville. The game is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Denver's Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
