Heritage Helps Bucknell Edge Hobart
from press release
GENEVA, N.Y. -- Fresh off his overtime goal
against Navy on Monday night, freshman attackman Todd Heritage
(Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) recorded two goals and two assists to
lead Bucknell to an 11-9 non-league win at Hobart on Saturday
afternoon at Boswell Field. Mike Danylyshyn (Fairport,
N.Y./Fairport), Charlie Streep (New Canaan, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee)
and Billy Eisenreich (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) also had two assists
each for the Bison, who are now 4-1 on the season.
Bucknell started and finished very well in this one. They scored the game's first four goals and led 6-1 midway through the second quarter. Hobart rallied within 6-5 at the half, and the Statesmen took a brief 8-7 lead late in the third quarter before the Bison stormed back with four straight goals to take control.
Heritage scored off the first of two assists on the day from Ryan Klipstein (Califon, N.J./Rutgers Prep) to get the Bison on the board at the 8:21 mark of the first period. Goals from Nick Gantsoudes (Redding, Conn./Avon Old Farms) and Danylyshyn made it 3-0 after one, and then Eisenreich stretched it to 4-0 early in the second quarter.
Hobart finally got on the board at 11:46 of the second quarter when Chris Pedersen scored off a Mike White feed. Danylshyn quickly answered for the Bison, and then they went up 6-1 at the 7:57 mark when a Hobart defenseman accidentally shoveled the ball into his own goal.
The Statemen started their comeback with a man-down goal from Alex Love with 4:20 left in the half. They would tally three more times over the next 1:33, including two goals in just six seconds from Sam Miller and Bobby Dattilo, to pull within 6-5 at the half.
Streep opened the second half scoring to give Bucknell a 7-5 lead, but later in the third quarter Miller scored the tying and go-ahead goals just 1:16 apart as Hobart took its first lead of the day.
Bucknell got one back on a Streep unassisted goal before the end of the third quarter, and then the floodgates opened up in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter. Eisenreich, Heritage and Chase Bailey (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) all scored unassisted markers in a span of only 3:25 to give the Bison an 11-8 lead.
The Bison defense took over from there, as Hobart managed only four shots with nine turnovers in the fourth quarter. Pederson scored with one minute remaining, but after letting a late lead get away against Navy earlier in the week, Bucknell shut the Statesmen down the rest of the way.
Bucknell finished with a 37-24 shot advantage while converting 18 of 19 clears. The Bison used two goalies in the game, with Kyle Feeney (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) making three saves and Josh Briskman (Weston, Conn./Weston) two.
Bucknell had a rare off day at the faceoff X, as Hobart's Dattilo, who came into the game winning better than 66 percent of his draws on the season, won 14 of 23.
The Bison are back in action Wednesday at home against Hartford. Game time is noon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
