Hometown Love Leads Hobart Past Canisius

from press release

GENEVA, N.Y. — The Hobart lacrosse team got strong performances from its established veterans, but it was the season-high five-point effort by first-year attackman Alex Love that stole the spotlight in the Statesmen's 10-8 non-conference victory over Canisius on Boswell Field tonight. The Geneva native scored a game-high four goals and handed out an assist.

Senior midfielder Tim Bigelow directed the attack, assisting on the game’s first three goals and finishing one off his career-high with four helpers, while junior attackman Sam Miller produced his fourth hat trick of the season. Hobart also controlled the faceoff X as junior Bobby Dattilo won the first 10 draws of the game and finished the night 16-of-20 with a game-high eight ground balls.

Senior goalie Evan Kirk logged 11 saves, including a point-blank robbery of Canisius senior attackman Greg Michael late in the fourth quarter.

Michael and junior attackman Simon Giourmetakis each registered three points to lead the Golden Griffins. Junior goalie Kyle Bell made eight saves in his second career start.

Love opened the night's scoring just 83 seconds into the contest, followed by goals from Miller and senior midfielder Mike White to stake the Statesmen to a 3-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

The teams traded goals in the second frame with Hobart carrying a 4-1 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Love had a hand in all four of the Statesmen's goals. He got things going with back-to-back goals 24 seconds apart to stretch the Statesmen lead to 6-1.

After Brendan O'Hagan (2 gls) and Nick LoCoco scored in succession to make it a 6-3 game, Love set up sophomore attackman Tyler Simmons and then scored his eighth goal of the year, assisted by Bigelow, for an 8-3 lead through three quarters.

The Golden Griffins made things interesting with three goals in the first five minutes of the final frame.

Protecting an 8-6 lead, Hobart twice hit the Canisius crossbar before Miller cashed in an assist from Simmons. The Statesmen hit the crossbar or post at least five times in the contest. Dattilo won the ensuing faceoff and sophomore midfielder Tyler Smith put away a feed from junior midfielder Derek Akner for a 10-6 lead with 6:24 remaining.

Michael closed out the scoring with consecutive strikes for the visitors, but Dattilo won the final restart of the night and Hobart was able to run out the clock without allowing another Canisius shot.

Hobart dominated the final box score, holding the advantage in shots (39-28), ground balls (33-21), and faceoffs (16-4). Both teams were 1-for-6 with the extra-man.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, March 26, when they open ECAC Lacrosse League play against Fairfield. The opening faceoff on Boswell Field is scheduled for noon.
