Mt. St. Mary's Edges RMU in NEC Opener

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Mount St. Mary's defeated
Robert Morris, 12-11, in the first-ever Northeast Conference game
for each team on Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium on
campus. The game featured six lead changes and was tied on
nine different occasions.
With the score tied at 9-9 heading into the final quarter, the Mount (4-4, 1-0 NEC) took the lead when Daniel Stranix scored his second goal of the game on a pass from Cody Lehrer with 12:14 remaining. The Mount's Brett Schmidt extended the lead to 11-9 with 6:21 left. It was the first time all game that the teams were separated by more than one goal.
The Colonials (5-4, 0-1 NEC) fought back on a Trevor Moore goal with 5:02 remaining in the game to cut the deficit to 11-10, but the Mount's Andrew Scalley scored his third goal of the game with 1:40 on the clock to give the Mount a 12-10 lead.
Robert Morris was assessed a penalty on the Scalley goal, but won the face-off and Kyle Buchanan was able to score a man-down goal with 1:25 left to cut the Mount lead to 12-11.
The Colonials again won the face-off and Patrick Smith had a chance to tie the game, but his shot was denied by Mount goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo with 1:25 left. Scalley had a chance to seal the win on the other end, but his shot went off the side of the net with 45 seconds remaining. Robert Morris was able to clear the ball and called timeout with 29 seconds on the clock.
On the final possession, Robert Morris was unable to get a shot off as the Mount defense secured the victory.
Brett Schmidt had three goals and an assist while Stranix finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Mount offense. Scalley added a hat trick to extend his consecutive games streak with at least one point to 25. Lehrer and Eric Ososki each had a goal and two assists in the win while Bryant Schmidt chipped in a pair of goals.
Trevor Moore had three goals to lead Robert Morris while Smith added two goals and an assist in the loss. Teddy Finnegan added a pair of goals for the Colonials with Casey Abbott, Buchanan and Corbyn Tao-Brambleby each chipping in a goal and an assist.
DiBartolo made 12 saves to earn the win, including several in one-on-one situations with a Robert Morris player. Charles Ruppert stopped nine shots for the Colonials. Robert Morris held a 38-37 edge in shots and a 30-28 ground ball advantage in the game.
Moore started the game quickly, scoring 31 seconds into the contest to give Robert Morris the early lead. The Mount countered with goals by Scalley and Brett Schmidt before Finnegan's first goal of the day tied the score at 2-2 after one quarter of play.
Smith gave Robert Morris a 3-2 advantage midway through the second quarter, but Stranix and Bryant Schmidt scored back-to-back goals to put the Mount ahead, 4-3. Moore and Scalley exchanged goals before Abbott and Tao-Brambleby scored in the final 2:27 of the half to put the Colonials ahead, 6-5, at the break.
The game remained tight in the third quarter with the Mount scoring three of the first four goals to take an 8-7 lead. Ososki, Lehrer and Bryant Schmidt each found the back of the cage during the run. Keith Lee tied the score for Robert Morris, but Brett Schmidt's goal with 3:15 left in the third quarter pushed the Mount back on top, 9-8. Smith scored with 2:12 left in the third quarter to knot the game at 9-9, setting up the exciting fourth quarter.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday, April 5, when Georgetown visits Waldron Family Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. game.
Game Notes: Mount St. Mary's is now 3-0 all-time against Robert Morris...This was the first-ever Northeast Conference game for each team...The NEC is in its first season of play this year...Brett Schmidt has 10 goals and four assists over the past three games...He is now tied for the team lead in points with Scalley at 25.
