Presbyterian Picks Up Second Win of Season
from press release
Tyler Melnyk (Calgary, Alberta) scored three goals in the fourth
quarter, while Patrick Foy (Orlando, Fla.) added one, to break open
a 10-10 tie, leading the Presbyterian College men's lacrosse team
to the 14-11 win over Mercer in front of 311 fans in the home
finale at Old Bailey Stadium this afternoon.
Seniors Andrew Athens (Huntingtown, Md.), Jon Athens (Huntingtown, Md.), Foy and Devin Pinkston (Purcellville, Va.) were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
PC improved to 2-7, while the Bears dropped to 1-11.
The Blue Hose stormed out of the gates in the first half and built an 8-3 lead after two quarters. Leading the attack were Andrew Athens, Imari Davis (San Diego, Calif.) and Foy with two goals apiece during the run.
Foy scored his third goal of the game to open the third quarter as PC led 9-3, 52 seconds in. Mercer netted the next seven of eight goals to knot the game up at 10 heading into the fourth quarter, however.
Foy found the back of the net at the 1:02 mark of the fourth quarter, while Melnyk added goals at 3:42, 6:22 and nine seconds after to lead the Blue Hose back to the forefront, 14-10. Mercer added a goal at 11:03 but with Jon Athens at the net, the Bears weren't able to advance the score any more, falling by the final, 14-11.
Jon Athens posted 15 saves, including four in the last three minutes of the game to stave off a furious Mercer rally, and take the win, his second of the year.
Melnyk and Foy both led the team with four goals apiece, while Andrew Athens added two goals and four assists.
The Blue Hose out-shot the Bears, 46-35, and held the 43-40 edge in ground balls. PC took 15-of-29 face-offs, including 14 from Derek Malone (Clinton, S.C.). Mercer won 14 face-offs.
The Blue Hose next travel to Durham, N.C., Monday, April 11, to take on the #4 Duke Blue Devils at 7 p.m. PC then faces #5 North Carolina Thursday, April 14, in Chapel Hill, N.C. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
