from press release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With six different
players scoring goals, and inspired play by Bears' senior goalie
Matt Chriss (Lutherville, MD) in the fourth quarter, Brown earned a
hard fought 6-4 win over Providence College Tuesday evening at
Lennon Family Field. The Bears, 5-7 overall, captured their
17th consecutive victory over the Friars (3-9) without a loss.
Chriss made six fourth quarter saves, many from point blank range, and finished with nine saves for the game. Brown had a 34-27 shot advantage overall, but the Friars out-shot the Bears by an 18-5 margin in the fourth quarter alone.
Brown controlled the first quarter of play, getting goals by senior Teddy Daiber (Rye, NY) and sophomore Johnny DePeters (Woodbury, CT), while keeping the Friars scoreless, to open a 2-0 advantage.
The Bears extended their lead to 3-0 at the half when freshman Sam Hurster (St. Louis, MO) found the back of the net on a feed from sophomore George Sherman (Greenwich, CT) with 6:12 left in the second quarter. Brown's staunch defense held the Friars to just three first half shots, with Chriss making two saves.
Providence got on the scoreboard first in the second half on a goal by Jake Nolan with 9:18 left in the third quarter to trail, 3-1.
Senior David Hawley (New Canaan, CT) scored his first goal of the game to give the Bears a 4-1 advantage on a shot that whistled through the net, and was called a goal by just one of the three game officials. Senior Andrew Feinberg (Owing Mills, MD) scored with 3:46 left in the quarter to lift Brown to a 5-1 advantage.
The Friars scored late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter to get back in the game, trailing 5-3 with 13:41 left to play on a goal by JT Weber.
With the momentum all in the Friars favor, Chriss made a number of point blank saves to get the Bears heading in the right direction. Junior Parker Brown (San Francisco, CA) took a pass from Feinberg all alone in front of the Providence net and scored with 7:57 left to play to lift the Bears to a 6-3 lead.
A late Providence goal after a Bears turnover accounted for the final score, 6-4.
Parker Brown was the Brown offensive leader with a goal and two assists. Brown captured 9 of 13 face-offs for the game, with senior Seth Ratner (Dallas, TX) winning 4 of 5, and freshman Tommy Capone (Watertown, NY) capturing 5 of 8 face-offs.
Brown plays its final home game of the season on Saturday, April 23, hosting #3 Cornell at Stevenson Field. It's Senior Day for 11 Brown seniors with game time at 3:00 p.m.
