Rutgers Announces 2011 Spring Schedule
from press release
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers men's lacrosse team has released its 2011 schedule, head coach Jim Stagnitta announced today. The Scarlet Knights face a difficult schedule that is highlighted by matchups with four teams that advanced to the 2010 NCAA Tournament and a match with BIG EAST rival St. John's at the New Meadowlands Stadium.
"We have always played a competitive schedule and this year is no different," said Stagnitta. "We now have some consistency in the BIG EAST portion of our schedule following the initial year of play. We have been able to maintain our traditional games versus Princeton, Army and Penn State, along with the very competitive BIG EAST schedule."
RU begins its spring with a trip to Hempstead, N.Y. for a scrimmage with Hofstra on Feb. 12.
The following weekend, the Scarlet Knights open their 2011 regular season by welcoming Wagner (Feb. 18) and Manhattan (Feb. 20) to Piscataway for a pair of weekend matches.
Following its contests with the Seahawks and Jaspers, RU hits the road for three-consecutive weekends taking on UMBC (Feb 26), Saint Joseph's (March 5) and Penn State (March 12).
Rutgers then returns home for a three-match home stand starting with a midweek matchup against Jacksonville on Tuesday, March 15. The following Saturday, March 19, RU hosts Army in a 1 p.m. contest at Yurcak Field.
The Scarlet Knights close out their home stand by opening BIG EAST play against 2010 national runner-up Notre Dame, a squad that RU downed 10-8 last season in South Bend.
Rutgers will stay in New Jersey for the next weekend, as it faces off with BIG EAST rival St. John's on Sunday, April 3, at the New Meadowlands Stadium in the first match of the 2011 Big City Classic. The 1 p.m. matchup will be televised live nationally on ESPNU.
The Scarlet Knights face another New York opponent the following Saturday (April 9) when they travel to Poughkeepsie to take on the Marist Red Foxes.
RU returns to Yurcak Field for a Tuesday night match with in-state rival Princeton. The April 12th contest with mark the 89th time that the two storied lacrosse programs have met since the inaugural matchup in 1922.
Following the game with their in-state rivals, the Scarlet Knights return to BIG EAST play when they travel to western Pennsylvania to take on Villanova on Saturday, April 16.
Rutgers closes out its road slate the following weekend when it takes on another BIG EAST rival, Syracuse (April 23), in another matchup that will air live on ESPNU.
RU ends its regular season by hosting a pair of BIG EAST opponents in Georgetown (April 30) and Providence (May 7). The game against the Friars will serve as a senior day for the Scarlet Knights.
Following the regular season, Rutgers will look to compete in the 2011 NCAA Tournament beginning May 14 and 15 at various campus sites and concluding at the home of the NFL's Baltimore Ravens, M&T Bank Stadium, on May 30.
"We have the opportunity every weekend from March to May to play against a highly regarded opponent, which always gives you an opportunity to stay in the hunt," Stagnitta said.
Rutgers finished the 2010 season with a 6-8 record and placed fifth in the final BIG EAST standings with a 2-4 conference mark.
