Delaware Tabs Five Captains

NEWARK, Del.
-- University of Delaware men’s lacrosse head coach Bob Shillinglaw, who has led the Blue Hens to consecutive Colonial Athletic Association titles and NCAA Tournament appearances the last two seasons, has announced his captains for the 2012 campaign.

Leading the Blue Hens in 2012 will be junior defender Connor Fitzgerald, senior attackman Eric Smith, senior longstick midfielder Taylor Burns, senior defensive midfielder Dom Sebastiani, and senior midfielder Carter Bloor.

Delaware is coming off another outstanding season in 2012 as the Blue Hens won their second straight league title. The Hens posted an overall record of 11-7, stormed past Hofstra and Massachusetts to capture the CAA Tournament title, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament before falling to highly-regarded Duke 15-14 in the opening round. The Hens have now advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times in the last seven years.

Fitzgerald, a finance major from Mount Sinai, N.Y. (Mount Sinai High School), is a three-year letterwinner who returns to a starting spot on defense. He started all 18 games a year ago, scored one goal, collected 42 groundballs, and ranked second on the team with 17 caused turnovers. He has recorded 24 caused turnovers in 34 career games.

Smith, a history major from Lutherville, Md. (Boy’s Latin High School), returns after leading the team in scoring a year ago when he started all 18 games and recorded 45 points on 25 goals and 20 assists. He also scooped up 28 groundballs. He score two or more goals ina game seven times during the 2011 seasons. He will be sidelined for the early part of the season with a back injury.

Burns, an economics major from Millersville, Md. (Severn School), returns as one of the Hens’ top longstick midfielders in the CAA. He played in 18 games a year ago and scored six goals, including two vs. Duke in the NCAA Tournament, and two assists. He has recorded 15 career goals in 39 games.

Sebastiani, an organizational community leadership major from Moorestown, N.J. (Moorestown High School), is among the Hens’ top defensive midfielders. A three-year letterwinner, Sebastiani, has played in 33 career games and recorded six goals and 11 assists. He contributed four goals, five assists, 32 groundballs, and 10 caused turnovers a year go.

Bloor, a marketing major from Corning, N.Y. (Corning East High School), returns to action after missing all but five games a year ago with a shoulder injury. He had scored three goals and dished out three assists before suffering the injury. For his career, he has played in 51 games and recorded 12 goals and 10 assists.

Delaware will host Colgate in a pre-season scrimmage tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 28, and will open the regular season next Saturday, Feb. 4, when the Blue Hens host Detroit Mercy at 1 p.m. at Delaware Stadium. The Hens will host eight games at Delaware Stadium this coming spring.
