Robert Morris Beats Air Force in Shootout

DENVER – In a high-scoring contest, the Air Force lacrosse team came up short in a 17-14 loss to Robert Morris Saturday in the opening game of the DU Face-Off Classic.
The Falcons, who trailed by as many as five goals in the third quarter, cut the margin to 15-14 with a man-up goal from sophomore Erik Smith (Golden, Colo.) with 8:30 remaining. However, the Colonials registered a man-down goal a minute later and added their final tally with 6:51 on the clock as Air Force was unable to get back on the scoreboard.
Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Smith each scored three goals, Kyle Cassady (So., Upper Arlington, Ohio) added four points (2g, 2a) and freshman Keith Dreyer (Malvern, Pa.) tallied three assists to lead the Falcons, who fell to 0-2 on the season.
Meanwhile, Jake Hayes led the way for the Colonials (3-0), tallying seven goals and an assist.
The game started out with back and forth scoring by both teams, when Robert Morris went on a 4-0 run to claim a 6-3 advantage in the first period. However, the Falcons scored a pair of goals in the final 34 seconds of the period and added another to begin the second stanza to tie the game.
Another run by the Colonials gave them a four-goal lead midway through the second period, and they held on to an 11-8 advantage at the half. Robert Morris pushed the margin to five goals with the first two scores of the third quarter, but Air Force battled back, tallying five of the last six goals in the period to get back within one.
The Falcons took advantage of their man-up opportunities, going 4-of-4 on the EMO. Meanwhile, the Colonials had the advantage at the face-off X, winning 20-of-35 draws.
