Villanova Beats Georgetown For First Time Since 1993

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The No. 20 Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (5-4, 1-1 Big East) could not keep up with the offense of No. 13 Villanova (6-4, 2-0), as the Wildcats jumped in front early and never looked back to win 15-7. The loss snapped Georgetown's nine-game win streak over Villanova, dating back to 1993.
Junior middie Dan McKinney (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) had two goals, while Brian Casey (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep), Jason McFadden (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) and Reilly O'Connor (Brooklin, Ontario[Canada]The Hill Academy) each had one goal and one assist in the loss for Georgetown.
The Wildcats dominated time of possession, taking 19-of-25 face-offs and held a plus 15 ground ball advantage over the Hoyas.
The Wildcats struck quickly, as Jack Rice scored a pair of goals within the first two-and-a-half minutes of play to put the Hoyas in a hole. Rice scored his third goal at the 9:41 mark in the first quarter, before Zac Guy caught a feed from Brian Casey and tip-toed the crease for the Hoyas first goal at the 4:15 mark in the first.
Villanova got off to a quick start in the second quarter, scoring two goals within six seconds, taking their largest lead of the game at four goals, before Dan McKinney scored with 6:55 left in the first quarter to make the score 5-2 Villanova.
Brian Casey closed the gap to two goals after a Hoyas time-out in the second quarter. Casey, wrapped around the crease and caught the feed from Jason McFadden, before beating the goalie high to the left side to make the score, 5-3.
The Wildcats scored with 34 seconds left until halftime taking a three-goal lead and the momentum into the third quarter. VU opened quickly, scoring four consecutive goals , to extend the lead to seven-goals with 5:17 remaining in the third quarter. McFadden ended the Wildcats run with a Georgetown goal with 2:01 remaining in the third quarter, but the Wildcats scored once more to take an 11-4 lead into the fourth quarter. Dan McKinney cut the lead to five goals, picking up a rebound in front of the Villanova goal and scoring for his second of the game, but VU scored two more within the span of a minute to open the lead to eight goals. A man-up goal for VU at 10:08 put Villanova in front 14-5.
C-Jay Engelke and O'Connor each scored late goals for the Hoyas, but it was not enough to overcome the Wildcats offense in the 15-7 loss.
Senior goalie Matt Winter took the loss, making 11 saves and allowing 13 goals. The Hoyas return home on Saturday, April 7 when they host St. John's at Multi-Sport Field with the opening face-off scheduled for 1:02 p.m.
