Clutch McGee Gives St. Joseph's Its Second Straight Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team grabbed its second victory in a row with a thrilling 10-9 overtime win against Marist, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Tuesday night. Sophomore Ryan McGee scored six goals but none more important than the game-winner which came with just one second left on the overtime clock.
The Hawks got off to a rough start as Marist jumped out to early 3-1 advantage. McGee got SJU on the board at the 12 minute mark with the first goal. Johnny Simanski added the second goal with 11 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to make the score 3-2 heading into the first break.
Captain Bobby Hurley kept the hot hand for Saint Joseph's as he was set up by McGee to tie the game. McGee went on to add his second at 12:03 in the second as the Hawks took their first lead of the evening. The Red Foxes answered back with a three-goal stretch of their own in the last 11 minutes of the first half and took a 6-4 lead into halftime.
The second half would belong to SJU as it outscored Marist in each quarter. After Marist scored its fourth in a row, McGee added two more as Kyle Williams got his first goal of the night. The Red Foxes added one more before the third ended making the score 8-7 in favor of Marist, heading into the final frame.
Drew Nesmith of Marist was committed a charging penalty just six seconds into the fourth as the penalty set up the game-tying goal when Williams found McGee for his fifth of the night. Nesmith gained some redemption as he scored the go-ahead with 9:28 to play in regulation. After a scoreless nine minutes of action, Williams netted his second to tie the game and send play into extra time.
Marist controlled the ball most of overtime after they won the face-off. The Red Foxes fired a total of six shots as Griffin Ferrigan made two saves in the extra frame. It took SJU until the 12 second mark in overtime to get its first shot. After Williams shot went wide, McGee sealed the victory with the go-ahead goal as the clock read one second.Ferrigan got his fifth win of the season while posting 11 saves as Craig Goodermote was credited with the loss after stopping 10 shots.
Jack Doherty, Connor Rice and Evan Guarini each scored two goal apiece to lead the Fed Foxes as Rice and Doherty each added two assists to their nights.
The shots were even at 33 while Marist held the advantage in face-offs at 14-9. The Red Foxes turned the ball over 20 tines to SJU's 15.
Saint Joseph's will return to action for its season finale on Saturday, as it honors its ten graduating seniors against Towson. The game is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
