Fairfield Names Captains for 2012 Season
from press release
Fairfield University men's lacrosse coach Andy Copelan announced today that fifth-year senior Brendan McTague (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), and seniors Brent Adams (Norwalk, Conn.) and Charlie Cipriano (Williston Park, N.Y.) have been elected team captains for the 2012 season. The trio was elected by a vote of their teammates.
"Our team has selected three outstanding young men as captains in Brendan, Brent and Charlie," said Copelan. "Their competitiveness, unselfishness and overall commitment level are exemplary and contagious. While all three have all league potential, they are ten times the people they are players. I'm confident that we are heading into the spring in good hands."
Adams begins his final season as one of the Stags most decorated players, with consecutive selections to the ECAC Lacrosse League First Team, as well as back-to-back All-NEILA accolades. He begins his final season as the team's active goals scored leader, with 43, and 62 career points. Adams, who has played in 37 games over the course of his career, is on schedule to graduate in May 2012 with a degree in Communication.
Cipriano was named the ECAC Lacrosse League Goalkeeper of the Year in 2011, as he finished his junior campaign 11th in the nation with a 7.93 GAA and 15th nationally with a league-best 177 saves. He has appeared in 32 games for the Stags, with 29 starts – including all 16 games last season. Cipriano has stopped 315 shots during that time, for a career .565 save percentage. He is on schedule to graduate in May 2012 with a degree in Sociology.
McTague has started each of the Stags last 30 games as one of the top defenders in the ECAC picking up second team accolades in 2010. He begins his final campaign with 70 career ground balls and 30 caused turnovers over the course of 41 career games played. McTague graduated with a Finance degree in May 2011 and is currently pursuing his MBA at the Dolan School of Business. As an undergraduate, he was a five-time member of the Department of Athletics 3.0 Club, including both semesters of his senior year.
Fairfield is a member of the ECAC Lacrosse League, and advanced to the championship game of the league's inaugural championship in 2011. The Stags have won at least seven games in each of Copelan's seasons at the helm, going 8-8 (3-3 ECAC) last spring, and have never finished below .500 under his tutelage.
