Providence Off to First 3-0 Start Since 2000

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team recorded its third consecutive win of the season with a 12-9 victory over Manhattan College on Saturday, March 2. Junior Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) tallied his third consecutive hat-trick to propel the Friars to victory. Providence's overall record improves to 3-0 (0-0 BIG EAST).
At the 6:16 mark of the first quarter, Providence trailed Manhattan, 2-0. Junior Robert Stack (Medfield, Mass.) notched the Friars' first goal with 5:15 left to play in the first. Including Stack's goal, the Friars tallied five consecutive goals to give Providence a 5-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
In the final three quarters, Providence and Manhattan added seven goals apiece. The Jaspers came within two goals of the Friars (11-9) with 4:28 left to play in regulation, but that was as close as they would get.
Six Friars notched goals in the victory including senior JT Weber (West Hartford, Conn.) who tied Wright with a game high three goals. Weber's hat-trick marked his second on the season. Wright and Weber lead the team in scoring with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Junior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) and sophomore Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.) added two goals apiece. In addition, Barton dished out four assists and finished with a game high six points.
Sophomore Robert Caffrey (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) tallied the Friars final goal of the game at the 3:39 mark of the fourth quarter when he buried a feed from Barton to give Providence its 12-9 advantage.
Junior Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.) finished 14-of-21 at the face-off "X" and collected 7 ground balls.
Defensively, the Friars were successful on 14-of-20 clears.Freshman goalie Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) earned his third consecutive start for Providence and recorded 11 saves in the Friars' victory.
The last time that Providence won its first three games of its season was in 2000 when they recorded wins over Holy Cross (10-9), Wagner (19-2) and Sacred Heart (10-9).
Providence returns to action on Saturday, March 9 when the Friars host Sacred Heart. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. and will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
