St. John's Upsets No. 7 Hofstra on Cernuto Goal

from press release

QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Kevin Cernuto scored his third goal of the game with four minutes to play to break a 6-6 tie and give the Red Storm of St. John's a 7-6 victory over seventh-ranked Hofstra at DaSilva Memorial Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

The Pride, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, slipped to 5-2 overall while the Red Storm improved to 5-2 with their second consecutive win.

Hofstra was led by freshman Sam Llinares with two goals and one assist while sophomore Mike Malave added a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Chris Selva stopped 10 shots in the Pride cage.

St. John's was led by Cernuto with three goals while classmate Kieran McArdle posted four assists. Senior goalie Jeff Lowman made 19 saves for the Red Storm to post his fifth win of the year.

The Pride jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter. Junior Drew Coholan opened the scoring just 1:32 into the contest on a short pass to the crease from Malave for his fifth goal of the season. Junior Torin Varn made it 2-0 for Hofstra with his 18th goal of the year from Llinares a little over two minutes later. Malave notched his seventh of the season, from sophomore Tyler Begley, with 9:11 to play in the first quarter to boost the Pride lead to 3-0.

St. John's got on the board just 44 seconds into the second quarter as Ryan Fitzgerald tallied an extra-man goal off a pass from McArdle to cut the deficit to 3-1. But Pride senior Aaron Jones bumped the lead back to three with his first goal of the season, off a rebound, with 11:09 to play in the half.

The Red Storm then went on a three-goal run to tie the game at 4-4 almost midway through the third quarter. Keith Switzer started St. John's off with his third goal of the year from McArdle to close out the first half scoring with the Pride leading, 4-2. Alex Lagodich cut the deficit to 4-3 with shot from 12 yards off a pass from McArdle just 2:43 into the third quarter. Cernuto then notched his second of the game and 16th of the season on a great individual effort almost four minutes later to knot the game.

But Llinares gave the Pride a 5-4 lead 45 seconds into the fourth quarter, taking a cross-field pass from Adrian Sorichetti and netting a man-up goal for his 11th tally of the season. Cernuto tied the game again for the Red Storm on a charge from the side to the crease with 8:44 to play in the game. Llinares, once again, gave the Pride a 6-5 advantage with an unassisted goal at the 5:34 mark. But the Red Storm tied the game at 7-7 just 13 seconds later as Connor Mullen notched his sixth goal of the season, off a pass from McArdle right off the face-off.

Cernuto gave the Red Storm their only lead of the contest 81 seconds later, coming around the cage and beating Selva for his third of the game and 18th of the year. The Pride had several opportunities to tie the game on possessions in the final two minutes but Lowman mad two saves and the Red Storm defense forced a turnover to end Hofstra's six-game winning streak over St. John's.

Hofstra outshot St. John's, 41-34, including 24-15 in the first half when Lowman made nine of his 19 saves. The Red Storm picked up 27 ground balls to the Pride's 22.
