Krieger's 15 Saves Pace Harvard Past Dartmouth

from press release

HANOVER, N.H. — Peter Schwartz and Carl Zimmerman recorded three points each and the visiting Harvard men's lacrosse team had an answer for every Dartmouth run in a 9-6 win Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field.

After goals by Zimmerman and Schwarts late in the first quarter and early in the second, respectively, gave the Crimson (4-3, 1-1 Ivy League) a 2-0 lead, Dartmouth (2-4, 0-1) rallied to tie once and get with again a goal on two other occasions. Each time, Harvard countered with two goals, keeping the Big Green from ever claiming the lead.

Schwartz and Zimmerman each scored two goals and assisted on another, as the Crimson won for the third time in the last four games. Five other Harvard players scored once each, and Harry Krieger made 13 saves, including five in the fourth quarter.

Jake Weil and Chris Costabile scored to tie the score at 2-2 in the second quarter, but Pat Fiorvanti's first goal of the season came at a pivotal time, five seconds before halftime.

Schwartz added his eighth of the season in the third quarter, only to see Dartmouth's Phil Hession cut the margin to 4-3 less than a minute later. Again, Harvard had an answer, in the form of tallies by Zimmerman and Gabriel Mendola separated by just 11 seconds.

Dartmouth climbed to within 6-5 later in the period, but Jack Walker reestablished Harvard's two-goal cushion and the defense took over. The Big Green put six shots on goal in the final 15 minutes, but only Johnny Carson's goal to make it 8-6 got past Krieger. Alex White put away his 12th goal of the season to seal the win, after Murphy Vanderveldehad scored earlier in the quarter.

Dartmouth held a 30-29 edge in shots, and the teams were evenly matched on the stat sheet, apart from a 12-6 faceoffs advantage for the Crimson.Rick Molé won 10 of his 16 faceoffs, while Mendola won both of his and picked up a game-high seven ground balls.
