Siena Triumphs Over Canisius in MAAC Battle
from press release
Saturday's performance may not have totally erased the memory of last season's MAAC Championship Game, but it certainly took some of the sting away. Ten Saints scored and seven posted multi-point games as Siena annihilated defending MAAC Champion Canisius 16-6 in Buffalo.
Meeting for the first time since Canisius (1-8, 1-2) stunned Siena (4-7, 2-1) 10-9 in last season's MAAC Title Game, the Saints were out to get revenge. The Golden Griffins scored the final four goals in that game, holding the potent Siena offense scoreless for the final 32 minutes.
But Siena had no trouble finding consistent offense Saturday as the Saints posted a season-high in goals. Siena scored five times in the first quarter and raced out to an 8-3 lead at the half.
Canisius never got closer than five goals at any point in the second half, and a five-goal run over a five-minute span midway through the third quarter doubled Siena's lead to 10 goals as the rout was on.
Siena's offense, which has been balanced all year long, was so again. Colin Clive led the way with his second straight four-goal game, while Nate Barry, Danny Martinsen and Thomas Schoener each added two goals and an assist.
Defensively, the Saints also posted a season best in allowing just six goals. Matt Sharp made 11 saves in cage for the Saints which are starting to find their stride having won three of four.
Six Golden Griffins scored a goal apiece with Billy Jacobbi leading all Canisius players with three points. Alex Giovenettio made nine saves for Canisius in two and a half quarters of action.
