Syracuse Scores Six in Fourth to Beat Notre Dame

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — With a 10-4 upset against #1 Notre Dame in the Konica Minolta Big City Classic, the #7 Syracuse men's lacrosse team clinches a share of the regular season BIG EAST Title for the third time in four years. With the victory, the Orange will be the second seed in the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament and will rematch Notre Dame, the three-seed, on Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. The tournament is hosted by Villanova.
Dylan Donahue had a career-high four points (3-1) against the Irish. All of his points came during the Orange's game-changing 6-0 run in the fourth quarter.
After heading into the fourth quarter tied, 4-4, Kevin Rice took advantage of a man-up opportunity, tallying a goal 26 seconds into the frame. His strike sparked the Orange's 6-0 run which included two assists from Rice and goals from Donahue, Hakeem Lecky and Scott Loy. Donahue scored three straight-goals, spanning from 12:24 to 4:43.
The win was the Orange's fifth against a top-10 opponent this season. SU went undefeated, 5-0, against top nationally ranked opponents in 2013. Syracuse outshot Notre Dame, 32-24, and edged them in ground balls, 29-19. Goaltender Dominic Lamolinara registered six saves for the Orange.
Play was even on both sides for the first three quarters of the game. After a scoreless first quarter, Notre Dame's Ryan Foley broke the 0-0 tie at 11:04 in the second quarter, giving the Irish its first lead of the night, 1-0.
Lecky scored his first of the night to tie the game right back up at 1-1 after he fired a shot from 10 yards out from the right side.
Two straight goals in the winding minutes of second quarter, gave the Irish a 3-1 advantage heading into halftime.
The Orange used a 3-0 run out of the locker room to take its first lead of the game, 4-3, just 4:31 into the third quarter. Matt Walters started the run with a man-up goal only 12 seconds into the first half off of an assist from Derek DeJoe. JoJo Marasco and Henry Schoonmaker each contributed goals during the run as well.
The Irish evened up the score, 4-4, after Matt Kavanagh scored his second strike of the night before the end of the third frame.
