Duke's Schedule Includes Six Tourney Teams
from press release
DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University head coach John Danowski has announced the team's 2013 schedule, which features 10 home contests against five preseason top 10 opponents. Overall, the Blue Devils will face six NCAA Tournament teams, including each of the 2012 NCAA semifinalists and reigning NCAA Champion Loyola.
Duke will play five road games overall, including making the short trek to Chapel Hill to take on ACC rival North Carolina. Six different conferences are represented on the schedule as well as trips to four different states, including Wisconsin.
Duke opens the 2013 campaign with consecutive games Feb. 9 and Feb. 10. The season opener features NCAA quarterfinalist and preseason No. 10 Denver at 12:00 p.m. The Blue Devils, looking to avenge last season's loss to the Pioneers, will face off with Denver for the sixth time overall and for the third straight season. Jacksonville visits Koskinen Stadium the following afternoon to round out the opening weekend.
The gauntlet continues the following weekend with a pair of contests against rival and preseason No. 3 Notre Dame and Mercer. The Blue Devils and Fighting Irish square off for the sixth time in the previous three seasons, while Mercer and Duke meet for the second time in the programs' histories. Duke leads the all-time series with Notre Dame 7-4 and is 2-3 in the previous five outings with the Irish.
The Blue Devils hit the road for the first time Feb. 22 at Penn for a 7:00 p.m., faceoff against the Quakers. Duke returns to the friendly confines of Koskinen Stadium the next two weekends with big time games against reigning NCAA Champion Loyola, March 2 and NCAA finalist Maryland, March 8. A tough road test at rival North Carolina awaits five days later before Duke returns home for a pair of contests against Towson and Georgetown.
Duke takes to the friendly skies to travel to Cambridge, Mass., for a 16th meeting between the Blue Devils and Harvard. After hosting new program High Point, April 5, the Blue Devils finish their ACC schedule against Virginia. Duke is 11-1 against the Cavaliers since 2007 and has won four straight.
In final preparation for the ACC Tournament, the Blue Devils travel to Danowski's alma mater Rutgers April 20. The ACC Tournament will be held the following weekend April 26 and 28 in Chapel Hill.
The Blue Devils end the regular season on the road May 5, traveling to first-year program Marquette. The NCAA Tournament commences May 11-12 with the first round played at campus sites.
Duke returns seven starters and 30 letterwinners from last season's 15-5 squad. The Blue Devils will be in search of their eighth ACC title and seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA semifinals.
