The Bucknell and St. Joe's Prep (Pa.) lacrosse communities are reeling in the wake of the death last week of Joe Walsh, a 19-year-old freshman attackman for the Bison who was a 2013 graduate and three-year letterwinner for the Hawks.
Details surrounding Walsh's death have not been released according to the wishes of his family, but friends and former teammates have taken to social media to express their shock and anguish at his passing, using the hashtag #KeepOnSmiling while sharing their thoughts of Walsh.
"We've been trying to come to grips with the loss of Joe Walsh," Bucknell coach Frank Fedorjaka said Wednesday. "We have heavy hearts and it's been really tough on everybody here, especially the guys on the team. On behalf of the team, the coaching staff and myself, we send our prayers to Joe and his family right now through this really, really tough time."
Walsh was a first-team All-Philadelphia Catholic League honoree after scoring 56 points as a senior for St. Joe's Prep.
"We're very sad to hear of his passing, and our thoughts and prayers are with [Walsh's] family," St. Joe's Prep coach Eric Gregg said.
In a November 2013 article on the outlook of the incoming freshman class, Fedorjaka said Walsh "can play both attack and midfield. Joe has great hands and can finish in tight, create his own shot and set up others. He is very close to being in the mix and has a very bright future."
He was also profiled in brief by PhillyLacrosse.com in January 2012 after committing to Bucknell.
The Bucknell team learned of Walsh's death Friday evening, prior to its scrimmage at Maryland. Fedorjaka and Bucknell officials declined to comment further on Walsh, citing the family's request for privacy.
