The Catamounts season opener on Saturday will mark the fourth straight season that UVM has opened the year against Colgate. Last year, Colgate was ranked 10th in the nation when Vermont hosted them in the team's first game of the season.
Vermont was picked to finish sixth in the America East Preseason Poll, which was voted on by the conference's coaches. The Catamounts return 54% of their scoring from a season ago, including Graham Horvath, who was ninth in America East in goals per game (2.29) in 2013. Derek Braig is also back for his senior campaign after leading the squad in ground balls (49) and caused turnovers (20) last season. Justin Rosenberg returns in goal after posting a .486 save percentage in his rookie campaign.
Last year, the Catamounts collected four wins, including an 8-7 triumph over conference-rival Binghamton in Vestal, N.Y. Vermont also defeated Bryant (6-5 in OT), Wagner (15-6) and Sacred Heart (8-7 in OT) for its other three wins.
The Raiders opened the season on Feb. 8 with a 7-4 victory over Bryant in Hamilton, N.Y. Attack Ryan Walsh registered a hat trick and middie Eric Foote added two goals to pace Colgate. Freshman Brandon Burke started in net for his first collegiate appearance and made nine saves to pick up the win.
Colgate was tabbed fifth out of nine teams in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. Senior captain Jimmy Ryan was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team after registering 15 goals and eight assists last season.
The Raiders finished the 2013 season at 8-7 overall with a 3-3 mark in conference. They reached the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament, where they lost to Lehigh 15-7.
Saturday's game will mark the 25th meeting between Vermont and Colgate in series history. The Raiders have won two of the last three meetings, including a 13-7 victory in UVM's season opener in Burlington last season. The Catamounts' last win in the series came in 2011 when Vermont earned a 9-4 victory on its home field.
LEADING THE SQUAD
Seniors Graham Horvath and Ahmad Zachary along with juniors Andrew Buckanavage and Andrew Muscara were selected by their teammates as team captains for the 2014 season. The four captains have combined to appear in 115 games and have tallied 67 points during their careers at Vermont.
Horvath is UVM's top returning scorer after tallying the second-most goals (31) and points (34) on the team last season. Patrick Clark, who finished the 2013 season second on the team in assists (9) and fourth in points (14), returns for his sophomore Campaign. Clark's fellow classmate, Justin Rosenberg, returns in net for the Catamounts following a strong rookie season in which he was third in the conference in goals against average (11.89) on his way to an all-rookie team selection.
Vermont added 10 freshmen to this year's squad after losing 12 players from last season's team. Michael Clarke (Rumson, N.J.), Ben Cox (Medfield, Mass.), Jon Diamond(Gladstone, N.J.), Hayden Jenkins (West Barnstable, Mass.), Jon Kaplan (Glastonbury, Conn.), Ian MacKay (Port Elgin, Ontario), Mark Phillips (Montclair, N.J.), Alex Stanko (West Newton, Mass.), Nick Tordone (Spring City, Pa.) and Karl Weller (Stowe, Vt.) each enter their freshman season with the Catamounts as part of head coach Ryan Curtis' eighth recruiting class at UVM.
Mike Kruger was named a UVM assistant coach after spending two seasons as the head coach at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. and two seasons as an assistant coach at Washington and Lee University. As a player, Kruger was a four-year starting goalie at Fairfield, where he finished his career ranked third among the Stags' all-time leaders in saves (536).
Pat March joined the staff as an assistant coach after serving in the same role at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. for two seasons and one year as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Roanoke College. March was a two-time honorable mention All-American as a player, and finished his career with 152 goals (2nd all-time at Roanoke), 91 assists (8th all-time) and 243 points (4th all-time).
Reyn Garnett was named a volunteer assistant coach in early January. Garnett was a two-time All-American at Georgetown before playing professionally for the New Jersey Pride and Long Island Lizards in Major League Lacrosse (MLL).
