Radin Scores 6 to Lead Marist Past Marquette, 16-12

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men's lacrosse team (2-2, 0-0 MAAC) defeated Marquette (1-3, 0-0 Big East) in its home opener on Saturday afternoon, 16-12. SophomoreJoseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with a career-high six goals and one assist, giving him a career-high seven points. Freshman J.D. Recor (Lancaster, N.Y.) tallied two goals and a career-high five assists.
Juniors Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) and Colin Joka(Conshohocken, Pa.) posted two goals and one assist each. Junior Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) netted two goals for Marist as well. Junior Patrick Eaker (Redding, Conn.) and sophomore Tommy Celmer (Summit, N.J.) notched one goal each while sophomore Dillon Walker (Wawa, Pa.) added an assist.
Junior goalkeeper Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) had an exceptional performance in goal with a career-high 14 saves. Sophomore Dominic Montemurro (Kings Park, N.Y.) bested his opponent in 17-of-30 face-offs.
Marquette opened up the first quarter with one goal each from Blaine Fleming and Tyler Melnyk to take an early 2-0 lead with 8:43 remaining in the opening period. The Golden Eagles' lead was short lived as Marist netted four goals to close out the first quarter to take a 4-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
Celmer put the Red Foxes on the board at the 6:10 mark to cut Marquette's lead to one. Radin would score three consecutive goals in one minute, all assisted by Recor to give Marist its 4-2 lead.
Begley opened up the second quarter with a goal for Marist off a pass from Radin to push the Red Foxes ahead 5-2 with 14:18 left in the second period. Eaker scored his lone goal of the game, unassisted, less than 10 seconds later to earn the Red Foxes a four goal lead.
Marquette responded with two goals, one from Bryan Badolato and another by Fleming, to cut Marist's lead, 6-4. The Red Foxes closed the second quarter with three straight goals in the final 10 minutes to take a 9-4 lead heading into the locker room.
Nesmith scored at the 9:58 mark off an assist from Begley to take a 7-4 lead. After five scoreless minutes, Radin notched his fourth goal of the game followed by Recor's first goal of the afternoon to post the 9-4 edge.
The Golden Eagles opened up the third quarter with back-to-back goals by Badolato and Melnyk to cut the Marist lead 9-6 with 9:32 to play in the period. Two more Marist goals by Nesmith and Recor, assisted by Walker, pushed Marist back up, 11-6 with 7:16 left in the third.
Badolato netted two more for Marquette to trail the Red Foxes by three but Joka scored 30 seconds later to give Marist a 12-8 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.
Two Marquette goals by Melnyk and Badolato opened up the fourth quarter of play to post a close 12-10 score in favor of the Red Foxes with 7:28 to go. Marist responded with three straight goals to take a 15-10 lead heading into the final two minutes of play. Radin struck first at the 5:29 mark, followed by Joka's second goal of the game, assisted by Recor, with 4:45 left in the fourth. After two scoreless minutes, Radin netted his sixth and final goal of the afternoon at the 2:24 mark off a pass from Joka to give Marist its 15-10 edge.
Marquette's Gately scored his lone goal of the game at the 2:09 mark with his Golden Eagles behind Marist, 15-11. Begley scored the final goal for Marist with 32 seconds left in the game to post a 16-11 edge. Marquette's Richard squeezed one more in with 22 seconds to go but the comeback attempt would fall short as the Red Foxes defeated the Golden Eagles, 16-12.
Marist returns to action on Friday, Mar. 7 against Towson. Face-off is set for 7 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.comments powered by Disqus
