Hofstra Bests Delaware to Take Fourth Straight Win

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y - Senior Torin Varn scored a season-high three goals and classmates Drew Coholan and Lance Yapor each added two goals and one assist to lead the Hofstra Pride to an 11-9 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Delaware Blue Hens at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The victory is Hofstra's fourth consecutive win as the Pride improve to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in the CAA. Delaware, which saw its four-game winning streak snapped, slips to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Varn, who extended his goal-scoring streak to six games, scored once in the first quarter to tie the game at 2-2 and added two more during the Pride's six-goal run in the second and third quarter. Yapor and Coholan each recorded season-highs of two goals and three-points with Yapor notching two goals for the third time this season. Sophomore Sam Llinares tallied one goal and two assists in one half of work. Junior goalie Chris Selva made four saves to post his fourth win of the season. Hofstra freshman Kris Clarke won 13 of 23 face-offs over Delaware's Tyler Barbarich, who entered the contest having won 70 percent of his face-off this season.

Delaware was led by Steve DeLargy with two goals while Jackson Finigan added one goal and three assists for the Blue Hens, who had eight different goal scorers. Tom Holland added a goal and an assist. Goalie Conor Peaks made 14 saves including nine in the first half.

After splitting the first four goals, Delaware tallied four of the next five goals to take a 6-3 lead just 1:48 into the second quarter. Alex Martinelli broke the 2-2 tie with his fourth goal of the year with 4:17 to play in the first period. DeLargy scored back-to-back goals to boost the UD lead to 5-2 just 54 seconds into the second quarter. After Llinares scored his 11th of the year, from Yapor, less than a minute later to close the gap to two. Tyler Barbarich scored right off the ensuing face-off to give the Blue Hens a 6-3 advantage.

But the Pride started their run with a man-up goal by Yapor, from Llinares, just 88 seconds later. Varn then notched his second of the game, from senior short-stick middie Anthony Zappone, before junior pole Ryan Rielly scored his first goal of the year with 1:39 to play to tie the game at 6-6 at halftime.

Hofstra continued its run in the third as junior Mike Malave notched his fifth of the year at the 5:02 mark, Varn completed the hat-trick 70 seconds later and short-stick defensive middie Steve Romano notched the first goal of his career 61 seconds after that to give the Pride a 9-6 advantage.

Dan Keane scored his seventh of the season for Delaware with 2:18 to play in the third to cut the deficit to 9-7. But Coholan posted his second of the game and sixth of the season 4:02 into the fourth quarter, and Yapor scored his second with 2:51 to play to boost the Hofstra lead to 11-7, Conor Frisina notched his fourth of the season with 1:26 to play, and Holland scored on the man-up with 15 seconds to play, with Finigan assisting on both goals, to close out the scoring for UD.

Hofstra, which defeated Delaware for the third consecutive meeting, outshot Delaware, 36-24 and picked up 24 ground balls to the Blue Hens 21. The Pride lead the all-time series with Delaware, 26-12.

The Pride return to action on Tuesday, March 18 when Hofstra travels into Jamaica, New York to face the Red Storm of St. John's at 3 p.m. The Pride will return to CAA action next Saturday when they travel to Philadelphia to face the 20th-ranked Drexel Dragons at 4 p.m.
