Villanova Opens Big East Play by Topping Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Anchored by the three goals of sophomore Johnny Gallaway(Middletown, Md.) and a 6-4 lead heading into halftime, the Villanova Wildcats (2-5, 1-0) claimed a 10-8 victory over Marquette (2-6, 0-1) on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wis. It marked the first BIG EAST Conference games for both teams in 2014.
The contest marked a renewed season for Villanova who began their BIG EAST conference slate with a 1-0 record. Marquette, in their first-ever BIG EAST game and inaugural home game of the 2014 season, moves to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in league.
The Golden Eagles began the game on a 2-0 run with scores from Kyran Clarke and Tyler Melnyk, but the Wildcats answered with three scores to bridge the first and second quarters with goals from Chris Piccirilli (Davidsonville, Md.), Devin McNamara(Lutherville, Md.) and Harry DellaFera (Locust Valley, N.Y.) to make it a 3-2 game with 12:44 remaining in the first half.
Less than a minute later, Marquette's Kyle Whitlow evened the contest at 3-3 before Gallaway, Austin Frederick (Baltimore, Md.) and Kevin O'Neil (Cockeysville, Md.) responded with another three goal run to increase the Wildcat lead at 6-3. With 44 seconds remaining in the first half, the Golden Eagles closed the Villanova lead at 6-4 heading into intermission.
Coming out of the locker rooms, another rally of three unanswered goals in the opening five minutes of the second half increased the VU lead to their biggest of the game at 9-4 with two scores from Gallaway and one from McNamara with 10:02 remaining in the third quarter.
Marquette answered with their biggest comeback in the game with four straight goals to make it a 9-8 contest with 2:17 left in regulation, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the Villanova lead. Villanova's Tim Mulrenan (Glen Ridge, N.J.) sealed the contest with a last-second score to make it a 10-8 game in favor of the Wildcats.Defensively, freshman goalkeeper Dan Willis (Moorestown, N.J.) collected eight saves in the victory while Marquette's Jimmy Danaher totaled nine in the loss. Senior John LoCascio (West Essex, N.J. ) led the field effort with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. 10 different Wildcats posted points in the victory.
Villanova will be back in action on Tuesday, March 25th when the Wildcats host Georgetown in conference action. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the CBS Sports Network.
