from Press Release
BUFFALO, N.Y. (3/23/2014) -- Junior Shayne Adams had three goals and an assist and freshman Jason Weber made 17 saves in net as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team started conference play with an 8-6 victory over Canisius on Sunday.
The win moved Detroit to 4-4 overall on the season, 1-0 in the MAAC, while Canisius fell to 3-4, 1-1 in league play.
For Adams, the three goals gave him his 17th career hat trick and the fourth of the season. Senior Alex Maini had two goals, while senior Tom Masterson and junior Scott Drummond each tallied a goal and two assists.
The game was tied at 3-3 at the half, but Detroit took command with three-straight goals in the third.
The first two were within 1:10 of each other as Maini scored with 11:07 on the clock in the third and then Adams made it 5-3 with 9:57 remaining with Masterson earning an assist on both plays. Just a few minutes later, Drummond fired one in to give UDM a 6-3 lead at the 6:39 mark.
Canisius was able to pull within two, 6-4, with a goal late in the third, but then Adams found the back of the net for his hat trick early in the fourth and Detroit would go up by four, 8-4, as junior Mike Birney beat the goalie with just 4:33 left.
The Golden Griffins made one last charge cutting the deficit to 8-6 with 1:05 remaining, but the Titans were able to stall that run and leave Buffalo with another win.
Detroit outshot the Golden Griffins, 37-36, and the No. 2 ranked man-up unit in the country was 2-for-2, while the defense held Canisius to 1-of-4 with the extra man, including killing off a 2-man down situation in the fourth.
The game started slow as both teams were feeling each other out in the cold, but Canisius was able to get on the board first almost 11 minutes into the contest.
Detroit came right back with its' high scoring man-up unit as Adams knotted it at 1-1 and then with about eight seconds left in the opening period, Masterson was able to get an unassisted marker and put UDM up 2-1.
The two teams traded goals after that with the Titans taking a 3-2 lead at the 12:23 mark on another man-up attempt as Adams gave the extra pass to Maini for a goal, but the Golden Griffins would net a marker just 20 seconds later to make it 3-3.
The teams then went scoreless the rest of the way for a 3-all score at the break.
Masterson also added two caused turnovers, while sophomore Paul Bitetti had one with three ground balls. Sophomore Damien Hicks won five faceoffs with three GB's and freshman Kyle Beauregard made his collegiate debut with two ground balls and a caused turnover.
