Marist Rallies Late to Out Fox Detroit

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The second-seeded Marist men's lacrosse team (6-8, 3-3 MAAC) defeated No. 3 Detroit in a thrilling game in the semi-finals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament, 11-9. Junior Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) and sophomore Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) each netted a hat trick and added one assist in the victory. Junior goalkeeper Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) had a phenomenal game in goal for the Red Foxes, stopping 15 shots.

Freshman J.D. Recor (Lancaster, N.Y.) scored two goals, including the game-winner, and dished out one assist for a total three points. Juniors Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.), Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.), and freshman Connor O'Neill (Sayville, N.Y.) added one goal apiece. Joka and O'Neill also passed out one helper each.

Sophomore Dominic Montemurro (Kings Park, N.Y.) won the battle at the X, victorious in 14-of-23 face-offs. Radin collected a game-high five ground balls while senior Gannon Osborn (Canandaigua, N.Y.) picked up four.

Nesmith opened up the game with a quick unassisted goal to give the Red Foxes an early 1-0 lead. Scott Drummond and Brandon Beauregard netted back-to-back goals in a two-minute span to give the Titans a 2-1 edge with 7:50 remaining in the first quarter. Radin responded with two unassisted goals of his own to give Marist its first lead since the opening minutes with 4:16 in the first. Shayne Adams scored his first of six goals with 2:38 left to tie the score 3-3 heading into the second quarter of play.

Adams scored his second of the night to give Detroit a 4-3 lead with 11:21 left in the second quarter. Joka and Nesmith scored consecutive goals two minutes apart to edge the Titans 5-4 with 5:42 to go. Adams closed the quarter the way he started it to tie the game at five-all at the half.

Adams took advantage of a man-up opportunity to complete his hat trick off an assist from Alex Maini to push the Titans ahead 6-5 with 14:04 left in the third quarter. Radin and O'Neill each scored one more to round out scoring in the third period as Marist led Detroit 7-6 leading into the fourth.

Detroit scored three straight goals in the fourth quarter to take a 9-7 lead with 8:33 left in regulation, its largest advantage of the game. Recor scored off an assist from Radin to pull Marist within one with just under four minutes to play. Nesmith tied the game 9-9 less than a minute later off a pass from O'Neill. Recor hit the game-winner with 2:51 left in the fourth off a helper from Joka. Begley snuck in one more goal as time expired to seal Marist's 11-9 victory.

The Red Foxes will face top-seeded Siena in the MAAC Championship on Saturday, May 3. Face-off is slated for 11 a.m. at Tenney Stadium. This is Marist's first trip to the finals since 2005 when they defeated St. Mary's to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
