Strong Slate Awaits Hofstra Men in 2014

Hempstead, NY – A 14-game schedule including nine home games at James M. Shuart Stadium highlight the 2014 Hofstra Men's Lacrosse schedule, that was announced by Pride Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Seth Tierney today.
Hofstra, which will host one of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal doubleheaders for the eighth time in school history on Saturday, May 17, will face nine teams which posted winning records last season including national semifinalist and quarterfinalist teams and two other Colonial Athletic Association squads who qualified for the NCAA tournament.
After a three-game scrimmage schedule in last January and early February, Tierney officially begins his eighth season at Hofstra on Saturday, February 15 for the return of Pride alum and former associate head coach Joe Amplo and the Golden Eagles of Marquette. Marquette was 5-8 in their first season last year.
The Pride will take their first road trip on Saturday, February 22 when they trek into New Jersey to face the Tigers of Princeton. The Tigers were 9-6 last year including a 10-7 win over the Pride at Shuart Stadium. Hofstra closes out the first month of the season by hosting future (2015) CAA member Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon, February 25. The Stags, who were defeated by the Pride, 9-2 in Connecticut last year, posted an 8-7 record in 2013.
The Hoyas of Georgetown return to the Hofstra schedule for the first time since 1997 and come to Long Island for a Saturday, March 1 contest. Georgetown, coached by Hofstra alum Kevin Warne, was 6-9 last year. The Buckeyes of Ohio State will face the Pride for the first time since 1987 on Saturday, March 8. OSU was 13-4 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals last season.
Hofstra begins its CAA season and concludes a four-game homestand on Saturday, March 15 against Delaware at Shuart Stadium. The Pride defeated the Blue Hens, 10-5 in Newark, Delaware in 2013. UD was 5-10 last year.
The Pride take to the road for games at St. John's on Tuesday, March 18 and at conference rival Drexel on Saturday, March 22. The Red Storm was 9-4 last season, including a 7-6 win over Hofstra in Jamaica. The Dragons, who defeated the Pride, 8-7 in a three overtime thriller last season, were 11-4 in 2013.
Hofstra returns for another four-game homestand at Shuart Stadium beginning on Saturday, March 29 when they host CAA opponent Towson. The Tigers edged the Pride, 7-3 in Maryland last season on their way to a 10-8 season and a NCAA tournament bid.
The next two opponents will be new to the Hofstra schedule as Siena and Marist make their debuts at Shuart Stadium on Saturday, April 5 and Tuesday, April 8, respectively. The Saints recorded an 8-9 record last season while the Red Foxes of Marist were 10-4 in 2013.
NCAA Championship semifinalists Cornell will face Hofstra on Saturday, April 12 for the first time since 2009 when they met in the NCAA tournament. The Big Red were 14-4 in 2013.
Hofstra wraps up the regular season with conference road games at Massachusetts on Saturday, April 19 and at Penn State on Saturday, April 26. The Minutemen edged the Pride, 9-8 last season on the way to a 7-8 record while the Nittany Lions, the defending CAA champions, defeated Hofstra 16-7 on the way to the NCAA tournament and a 12-5 mark.
The CAA Championship, featuring the top four teams, will be held at the site of the higher seed on May 2 and 4.
Hofstra will compliment their preseason drills with three scrimmages including one at Syracuse on January 25 and two, against Hobart and Rutgers, on February 1 at Shuart Stadium.
