Chesnut Hill's Melnychenko Earns ECC Honors
from press release
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – The East Coast Conference (ECC) recognized freshman attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) as the league's top rookie of the second time this season. Melnychenko was selected for the ECC Rookie of the Week award after netting five goals in Chestnut Hill College's 13-6 defeat of Wheeling Jesuit University on Sunday, April 3. Melnychenko earned his first ECC Player of the Week award on February 28, after a seven-point debut week.
In this week's win over Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU), Melnychenko totaled five goals for the second time in Chestnut Hill College's (1-1, 0-1) last three contests. Melnychenko scored the Griffins first goal (7:13) and then made it 6-0 with his second and third goals of the contest coming at the top of the second quarter, 14:49 and 11:47. From that point the scoring was even to intermission, 9-3. After the break, WJU cut the lead to 9-5 with 12:14 remaining in the third period, but the Cardinal run was short-lived with three responding Griffin strikes, 12-5. Each side would add one more strike before the final horn leaving the Griffins with a 13-6 triumph.
Melnychenko also recorded an assist and two ground balls in the affair.
Melnychenko leads the Griffins in goals (26) and points (31) this season while ranking second on the team in ground balls (27). He has been successful on 47.3% of his shots (26-for-55) and is among the ECC's top five in goals-per-game (3rd, 3.25) and points-per-game (4th, 3.88).
The men's lacrosse team continues their ECC schedule with a trip to Seton Hill University for an 11:00 a.m. contest on Saturday, April 9.
