from press release
ERIE, Pa. - The No. 1 Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team won, 17-5, over Chestnut Hill in the 2012 home opener Saturday afternoon at Tullio Field. Deven Alves and Matt Hummel each scored four goals in the East Coast Conference (ECC) victory.
On a brisk day in Erie, the Lakers fell behind 1:54 into the first quarter. Hurst quickly turned things around, scoring the next five goals of the half. Alves got his day going and then Hummel notched his first score. Zac Reid scored and then Alves added another goal.
Brandon Thomson scored early in the second quarter, as Alves had the assist. Mike Duddy briefly slowed the run, but the hosts answered with seven consecutive scores. Hummel, Brian Scheetz, Greg Bensman, Brady Heseltine, Reid, Alves, and James Chayka all scored as the Lakers took a 12-2 lead into the fourth period.
Hummel added two more goals, while Alves, Bensman, and James Rogan each scored once in the frame.
All told, Hurst took 54 shots to 14 for Chestnut Hill. The hosts won 20-27 faceoffs and picked up 19 groundballs, to nine for the Griffins. Michael Grace made three saves in net for the victory.
The 54 shots are the most attempted by a Laker outfit since they took 62 on March 13, 2010. They won that match, 18-4, over Molloy. The 17 goals are the most since the last contest of the 2010 campaign, a 20-13 shootout against Dominican on May 8, 2010.
The Lakers improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the ECC with the win. The Griffins dropped to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Hurst travels to Mercy on Saturday, March 10, for another ECC match.
