No. 3 Merrimack Tops No. 11 St. Michael's

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. –The No. 3 men's lacrosse team picked up a confence victory on Wednesday night by the score of 10-9 over the No. 11 Saint Michael's Purple Knights. Corey Lunney (Little Silver, NJ) led the Warriors offensively with three goals on the afternoon.
Greg Melaugh (Billerica, Mass.) picked up two goals for the Warriors in the victory. DJ Brown (Huntington, NY) scored one goal and picked up two assists on the afternoon. Freshman Paul Gallagher (Simsbury, CT) picked up a goal and an assist and Steve Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) recorded his first career goal.
The Warriors outscored the Purple Knights 6-5 in the second half to pick up the victory at Martone-Mejail Field.
Saint Michael's would strike first with a goal from Max Zuccarini with 8:05 showing on the first period clock. Lunney however would respond less than two minutes later to make the score 1-1 as he fired one past the Purple Knights goalie.
Zuccarini would give the Purple Knights the 2-1 lead with just over five minutes left. The first period would end with the score staying 2-1 in favor of Saint Michael's.
Lunney would find the Back of the net for the second time in the game as John Smyth (Bradford, Mass.) found him alone in front for the tying goal. Saint Michael's would score the next two goals to give them the 4-2 lead with 7:42 left in the opening half.
Gallagher would respond for the Warriors with his second of the season to cut the Purple Knights lead to one. Jamie Shand (Massapequa, NY) would level the game at four less than a minute later after a Brown pass led Shand straight to the net.
The first half would end with the score tied at four. The Warriors were outshot in the first half 27-19 but they were successful of 9-10 clearing attempts. Merrimack went 1-5 in man up opportunities in the opening half.
Melaugh opened up the second half of play with a laser of a shot that found the back of the net after a Paul Jones (Guilderland, NY) assist giving Merrimack the 5-4 lead with 13:26 remaining in the third period.
The Purple Knights would go on a 3-0 run over the next six minutes to give them the 7-5 lead before the Warriors would go on a 4-0 run of their own to close out the third period. The third goal of the run would be scored by Suoza, marking his first career tally after a clean faceoff win by Nick Maggio (Winchester, Mass.). The fourth Merrimack goal was scored by Nick Vazquez (Haverhill, Mass.) making the score 9-7 in favor of the Warriors.
Marty Vanzo would find the back of the net with 10:22 remaining in the game but Brown would respond for the Warriors to give them a two goal advantage, 10-8 with eight minutes left. Vanzo would connect on his second goal of the period to narrow the Merrimack lead to one.
The Warriors would hold of the late Purple Knights attack as Morgan Green (Portsmouth, RI) made key saves down the stretch to preserve the victory.
All-American Peter Schielke (Ridgefield, CT) led the way defensively once again for the Warriors causing a game-high five turnovers and scooping up three groundballs. Jimmy Holland (Billerica, Mass.) would continue his solid play with three caused turnovers and three groundballs on the afternoon. Brandon Waiter (Staples, Ct) led all players with five groundballs on the afternoon for the Warriors.
Reigning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week Green, improved to 7-0 on the season after making a career-high 14 saves in net and also grabbing five groundballs. Maggio was dominant all afternoon long in the faceoff circle winning 15 of 23 faceoff's and also picking up his first assist of the season.
The Warriors were outshot for the game by a slim margin of 39-36 and were successful on 16 of 22 clearing attempts. Merrimack scooped up 28 groundballs as a team and were 1-6 on their man up chances.
The Warriors will hit the road for a conference showdown with #2 Le Moyne on Saturday at 1 pm.
