Limestone Holds Off Belmont Abbey in CC Semis

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Fourth-ranked Limestone jumped out to 8-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game scoring on 8 of its first 10 shots, including its first three attempts as the Saints defeated Belmont Abbey, 11-6, in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Lacrosse Championship on Friday, April 20 at the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park in Charlotte, N.C., where the Saints will meet either second-seed Pfeiffer or third-seed Queens on Sunday, April 22 at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Limestone improved to 13-1 overall and in the process extended their NCAA Division II South Region win streak to 46 games which includes an 13-0 mark on the season while the Crusaders fall to 5-9.
The Saints went up 3-0, 1:33 into game, junior midfielder Zach Cummings (Crownsville, Md.) scored unassisted 57 seconds in while senior midfielder Desi Gonzalez (Massapequa, N.Y.) put one in on off a feed from junior attack Riley Loewen (Burnaby, British Columbia) and junior midfielder Corey Rich (Sacramento, Calif.) deposited a pass from junior midfielder Jake Ternosky (LaFayette, N.Y.) on the Saints' next two possessions and the Saints coasted from at that point.
In addition to that assist, Ternosky also won 13 of 19 face-off attempts and had a game tying best three ground balls with Limestone holding a 22-14 edge in that category.
Loewen led the Saints with three points on the day (2g, 1a) and along with Gonzalez and Rich were three of the four Saints that had two goals each with the other senior midfielder Jackson Decker (Port Moody, British Columbia).
In the crease senior Steve Gartelman (Seaford, N.Y.) made 11 saves (5 GAA) in 45:00 of action improving to 13-1 on the season.
Neither team scored in extra-man opportunities, with Limestone 0-for-3 while the Saints, nationally No.1 man-down defense held Belmont Abbey scoreless in the Crusaders five tries.
Belmont Abbey was 18-18 on clears while the Saints were 15-21.
As noted earlier, Limestone will play either Pfeiffer or host Queens in the Sunday, April 22 title game, tentative face-off 3:30 p.m.
Limestone seeks a fourth consecutive Conference Tournament Championship and 14h in the last 15 seasons. Limestone seeks its fourth since Conference Carolinas has sponsored the sport, adding to one in the then Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference with the others coming as member of the Deep South Conference.
