from press release

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.
- The No. 1 Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team won, 7-6, at No. 7 NYIT Saturday afternoon. James Chayka's fourth goal of the day came with two seconds left in the East Coast Conference (ECC) match.

Down 5-3 after three quarters, the Lakers began their comeback. Mitch McAvoy won the face-off to open the period and quickly fired a shot that went high. Two other Laker shots went missing before Chayka picked up a groundball. He found Jake McAndrew, who dished to Zac Reid for the score.

Kyle Kallay's shot on the next possession was stopped by NYIT goalie Billy McGee, setting up a Bear opportunity. Sean Rimmer scored with 10:23 left to put the hosts up two again. The teams traded turnovers and then the Lakers called timeout. With 7:43 left in the fourth, Chayka scored to make it 6-5.

McAvoy won another face-off and set up the Mercyhurst attack. McAndrew found the back of the net with 6:28 to play, tying the contest. Each team had chances down the stretch, including a Reid shot that drew iron with under five minutes remaining. McGee saved a Deven Alves try with 2:27 left, but Michael Grace came up big on the other end, saving a Rimmer shot with less than 50 seconds left.

Cam Edmiston collected the ensuing groundball and triggered the Lakers' final chance. Chayka scored with two seconds showing on the clock, keeping Mercyhurst undefeated in 2012.

Chayka also opened the scoring with 6:17 to play in the first period. Grace stopped a Bear shot and set up the Laker offense, with Kallay cashing in at the 3:47 mark for a 2-0 lead.

Ryan Brunet began his stellar match with a goal less than a minute later to get the Bears' on the board. After a Laker penalty, Brunet found the back of the net again with 10 seconds remaining in the first. The defenses took over in the second quarter, as neither team got on the scoreboard.

Another Mercyhurst penalty led to an NYIT score with 9:09 left in the third period. Brunet finished a Jason Smith pass for a 3-2 Bear edge. Brunet was then called for a cross check and the Lakers converted the man-up chance, as Chayka evened the score with 7:14 left.

Less than a minute after that, Brunet atoned and regained the hosts' lead. Each goalie made a save before Smith beat Grace with 2:07 showing on the clock, giving the Bears a 5-3 advantage.

Chayka totaled a career-high four goals, while McAndrew had a goal and an assist. Reid and Kallay had the other scores. Grace made five saves to improve to 11-0 as the starting goalie. Brunet had four goals for the Bears and McGee recorded 11 saves.

Mercyhurst posted 35 shots to 25 for NYIT. Each team won eight face-offs.

The Lakers have now won 18 straight games dating back to last season. They have taken eight of the last nine matchups with NYIT. Mercyhurst improved to 11-0 this year, while Tech dropped to 11-3 overall.

Coach Chris Ryan's squad heads to Dominican Saturday, April 28. The ECC game is slated for a 1 p.m. face-off.
