Ruhlig, Costello Pace LIU Post Past Molloy

from press release

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Senior Chris Ruhlig (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) and grad student Joe Costello (Minneapolis, Minn.) both powered in four goals apiece to lead the fifth-ranked LIU Post men's lacrosse team to a 15-11 victory over the Molloy College Lions on Saturday afternoon.

The game was part of a fundraiser held during the day as both teams supported "Team Connor". Connor, the son of Molloy alumna Beth Kyranakis Bradley, and family friend of LIU Post senior goalkeeper Tim Bradley, was diagnosed with leukemia on February 10 and is currently undergoing treatment at The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital. Connor attended the game and served as an honorary team captain, standing at midfield during the captains meeting and shaking hands with the players post-game.

LIU Post improved to 10-2 overall with the victory and kept a perfect 6-0 ledger in ECC play, while Molloy suffered just its third loss but dropped to 10-3 and 3-3 in conference action.

The Pioneers grabbed a 4-0 lead behind goals from Ruhlig and two from Costello in the early going, but Molloy scored two in the latter half of the first quarter to keep pace with the hosts. Freshman Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.) found the back of the net with 32 seconds remaining to give the Pioneers a 4-2 lead at the end of the first.

Molloy tied it up with goals at 14:17 and 8:50 to open the second quarter, and another Ruhlig goal at 7:40 was matched by Molloy's Peter Clark tally at 5:10 and the game was knotted at 5-5.

But the Pioneers scored three of the last four goals before halftime to take an 8-6 lead heading into the break, including a goal by senior defender T.J. McAndrew (Randolph, N.J.) that was just the second of his career.

The Pioneers and Lions traded goals to begin the third quarter, with freshman Anthony Berardis (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Costello accounting for the scores, and at 10:8, after Clark's second goal of the game, the Pioneers had a two-goal lead (10-8). But Ruhlig scored on a Ryan Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) assist at the one minute mark, and Slane slotted in a goal of his own with just four seconds left in the quarter to extend the Pioneers' lead to 12-8.

Ruhlig scored again at 13:32 to give the Pioneers a 13-8 lead, and the Pioneers were able to withstand a three-goal spurt by Molloy that made the score 13-11, before regaining control of the pace and scoring the last two goals of the day, a Connor Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) tally at 4:36 and another goal by McAndrew into an empty net with 49 seconds left in the contest.

Totals for the game in addition to Ruhlig and Costello's four tallies apiece, saw McDAndrew and Slane each score two goals, while Slane added two assists. Beccaris added one goal and one assist, and Drost scored one goal and assisted on three others.

Bradley earned the victory in goal as he stopped 10 shots in improving to 9-2 on the season. Molloy counterpart John Grebe made 15 saves for the Lions.

The Pioneers look to close out their season on a winning note as they host Chestnut Hill next Saturday at noon. The game will also serve as senior day for the team.
