Janssen Helps Adelphi Squeeze Past Bentley

from press release

GARDEN CITY, N.Y.
– The third seeded men's lacrosse team took on the sixth seeded Falcons of Bentley University (5-9) earlier this afternoon on Motamed Field in the first round of the Northeast-10 Tournament. Despite the Falcons striking first in the low scoring affair, three straight periods with two goals in each propelled the Panthers to a 6-4 victory. With the win, Adelphi (13-2) will advance to face the second seeded Warriors of Merrimack in the semifinals.

Nearly six minutes of scoreless action was featured in the opening period. It was not until Bentley's Brendan Grant finally broke the silence at 9:11 with the first goal of the game on an unassisted play.

The Falcons held the 1-0 advantage for nearly 15 minutes until Joe Vitale leveled the playing field with an unassisted score. Just 4:05 later, Joe Celano followed up with a goal of his own on a feed from Jeff Melsopp to take the 2-1 lead which would hold through the half.

1:20 into the third, Matt Dente knotted the game at two on a pass from Brendan Grant. The tie would last nearly seven minutes until Danny Blau, on a nice wrap around shot, gave the Panthers the lead once again at 3-2.

Eight seconds later, off of a successful face off by Greg Puskuldjian, long stick midfielder Kevin Kennedy notched his 12th goal of the season as he beat goalie Brian Karl to put the Panthers up by two.

In the fourth, Vitale and Michael Rossi completed the four-goal run with their second and first goals of the game respectively to give Adelphi their largest lead at 6-2.

In their last charge, Justin Jolmes would get two back for Bentley, but the deficit proved to be too large to come back from as the final seconds ticked away and the horn sounded in favor of Adelphi.

Eric Janssen made a career high 20 saves as he picked up his 13th win of the season and logged all 60 minutes.

The win also marks the 50th career victory for Head Coach Gordon Purdie.

The Brown and Gold return to action in the semifinal round of the Northeast-10 Tournament when they travel to North Andover, MA to take on #2 Merrimack on Friday, May 4 at 4pm.
