Merrimack Inks Seven to National Letters of Intent

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack men's lacrosse team has signed seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period for the class of 2016.

"The Merrimack Men's Lacrosse program is very proud to announce the seven student athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent to join our class who will be joining us in the fall of 2012," said head coach Mike Morgan who will enter his fifth season in 2011. "This is a group of skilled, hard working athletes, all from great high school programs and we are excited as a staff to welcome them to our program. The success of Merrimack College as well as the lacrosse program continues to allow us to recruit all over the country. Our staff is looking forward to have such a great group joining our roster next season"

In 2011, the Warriors recorded an 11-6 record, advancing to the Northeast-10 Conference final for the third consecutive season after defeating top-ranked Le Moyne in the Northeast-10 Semifinals, becoming the first team since 2003 to defeat the Dolphins in consecutive games in Syracuse. The 2011 Warriors featured five NEILA first team members, four of which are returning, including Nick Maggio (Winchester, Mass.), Steven Frey (Madison, CT), Peter Schielke (Ridgefield, CT), and Corey Lunney (Little Silver, NJ). Lunney was also named the NEILA All-New England Player of the Year.

Tim Towler, Midfield, (Masconomet, Mass. / Masconomet H.S.)
2011 All American...two time CAL League All Star and All Scholastic...four year starter...47 goals and 23 assists as a junior.

Morgan on Towler: "Tim brings a combination of size and speed to our midfield. He can shoot extremely well on the run with both hands and knows how to get his own shot. He has the ability to push the ball in transition and is also strong as a two way midfielder. He was one of the top midfielders that we saw all of last summer."

Greg Swanson, Midfield, (Boca Raton, FL./ Boca Raton H.S.)
2011 All District Midfield....all League 2nd Team 2011...two Year varsity starter....38 goals and 29 assists as a junior.

Morgan on Swanson: "Greg has excellent speed and is a very slick dodger. He has a nose for the net and a great feel on offense. Greg has become one of the top players in Florida entering this spring. He is one of the most athletic players we have recruited and will be a nice addition to our team speed."

Tim Oteri, Defense, (Andover, Mass. /Andover H.S.)
2011 1st Team All Merrimack Valley Conference....Adidas All American 2011...Boston Globe All Star....13 points at long stick midfield as a junior.

Morgan on Oteri "Tim is an extremely rangy long stick with a very good stick. He is very solid as a cover guy and is very good in transition. He has the ability to play position defense or throw a take-away when needed. He gives us a new dimension to our midfield as well, and has the combination of size as well as speed which is rare."

Sam Harris, Defense, (Maple Grove, MN. /Totino Grace H.S.)
2011 All Conference & All NSC Section Team....two year captain....three year starter....62 groundballs and 23 caused turnovers as a junior.

Morgan on Harris "Sam is a very aggressive and relentless defender. He has the ability to play anywhere on the field and is a very good on ground balls as well. He is one of the top handful of players in Minnesota entering the spring. Coming from a great program like TG will have him prepared for the next level right away."

Jon Barton, Goalie, (Hanover Mass. /Boston College H.S.)
2011 Catholic Conference Honorable Mention All Star...two year starter....6.2 Goals against average in 2010 and 6.9 Goals against average in 2011.

Morgan on Barton "Jon has a combination of good size and quick hands in net. He also has a knack for playing very well in big games. Jon also has a very quick outlet which will add to our up-tempo transition game. At times this Jon showed the ability to play at the level of any goalie we saw this summer. He comes from a great high school program, so we know he will be ready for the high level of competition he will face here."

Scott Corcoran, Defense, (Wilmington, Mass. /Austin Preparatory)
2010 & 2011 Boston Globe All Catholic League All Star and Scholastic All Star...three year varsity starter..59 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers in 2011.

Morgan on Corcoran "Scott is a very aggressive defender who is relentless on ball and will bring an added toughness to our squad. He has the ability to play down or up at long stick midfield due to his athleticism. Scott has the ability to cause turnovers and is very solid in transition. He will probably be one of the more athletic defenders on our team next year."

Ryan Poirier, Midfield/Attack, (Warwick, RI. /La Salle Academy/Brewster Academy.)
2011 All American....Adidas All American 2010 & 2011....1st Team All State 2010 & 2011...2011 Overall point leader in Rhode Island...finished career with 75 goals, 70 assists and 145 groundballs.

Morgan on Poirier "Ryan is a very quick and skilled offensive player that can contribute at a high level at both midfield as well as attack. He will give us another offensive player who can get to the goal and has a very high lacrosse IQ. Ryan also has shown that he can play well off ball as well as get his teammates involved. Being the top point scorer in RI last year shows he can consistently perform at a high level."
