Scheetz, Top-Ranked Mercyhurst Down Queens

from press release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The No. 1 Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team won, 13-7, at Queens (N.C.) Sunday afternoon. Brian Scheetz posted seven points as the Lakers opened the 2013 season with their 19th consecutive regular season win.

On Sunday, Mercyhurst went down 1-0 before scoring twice to take a 2-1 edge after one quarter of action. With 5:58 left, Scheetz found Trevor Vargo for the Lakers' first score of the year. Mark Saltrelli picked up the groundball on the ensuing faceoff, setting up a Laker timeout. Deven Alves hit Jake McAndrew for the go-ahead goal just 39 seconds after Vargo scored.

The second period would prove to be decisive, as Coach Chris Ryan's squad exploded for seven goals to take control of the match. Saltrelli picked up a groundball and then assisted on a Scheetz goal just 10 seconds into the frame. Two minutes later, E.J. Sellie hit McAndrew for his second goal and a 4-1 advantage. Mercyhurst continued its momentum, winning another faceoff. Eventually, James Chayka passed to Zac Reid, who found the back of the net with 11:33 to go in the half.

After a Michael Grace save, the Lakers moved back onto the offensive. Alves found Brady Heseltine for a goal at the 8:44 mark. Grace made another save, and after a Queens penalty, Scheetz found McAndrew for a score, giving the visitors a 7-1 lead midway through the quarter.

The Royals finally got back on the board, but Mitch McAvoy answered almost immediately. The Lakers' specialist picked up the faceoff groundball and assisted on another Scheetz goal, just five seconds after Queens had scored. Brandon Thomson found Brent Rotz for another goal with 3:18 remaining before the Royals scored, sending the Lakers into halftime with a 9-3 advantage.

The third period did not feature as much action, with Heseltine's goal from Reid the only score of the quarter. Heseltine opened the scoring in the fourth frame, depositing a Scheetz pass into the net for an 11-3 lead 51 seconds in. Queens scored the next three goals to try to get back into the contest, but a Scheetz man-down goal with 7:45 to play made it 12-6 Mercyhurst. Queens cut the deficit to five, but with under four minutes left, Scheetz assisted on Reid's second goal, creating the final margin.

Scheetz led with three goals and four assists. The school's career points leader came within one of tying a career-high in points in a single game. McAndrew and Heseltine each recorded hat tricks, while Reid added two goals and an assist. Alves dished out two helpers. McAvoy won 12-18 faceoffs and picked up a team-high six groundballs. Grace compiled 12 saves in goal. Garrett Chan paced the Royals with three goals and an assist.

As a team, the Lakers outshot Queens, 39-31.

Mercyhurst will practice in North Carolina this week before taking on Pfeiffer on Saturday, March 2. Faceoff is slated for 2 p.m. in the non-league match.
