Murphy Helds NYIT Topple Top-Ranked Adelphi

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The No. 7 NYIT men's lacrosse team avenged its 2013 NCAA First Round loss to Adelphi University with an 11-6 upset of the No. 1 Panthers Wednesday afternoon at President's Stadium. The Bears improved to 11-3 on the season while handing the Panthers their first loss of the season at 13-1.
Sophomore Shawn Murphy (Holbrook, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman Tom Hughes (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) led the Bears with four goals apiece. Murphy also dished out two assists for a game-high six points.
The win went to rookie goalie Alex Seltzer (Plainview, N.Y.), who improved to 11-3 overall. He made 14 saves on 20 shots faced. The loss was dealt to Adrian Bennardo (13-1), who made 8 saves on 19 shots faced.
NYIT quickly took control of the scoreboard with a 4-1 lead by the end of the first period. However, Adelphi rallied back and made it a one-goal game, 5-4, with 5:37 remaining in the second stanza. However, the Panthers could not catch the Bears as NYIT closed out the first half with an 8-4 lead off hat tricks from Hughes and Murphy.
Hughes scored the eventual game-winning goal with 1:09 to play in the second period off an assist from Murphy.
The third period yield just one goal in the favor of Adelphi, but NYIT owned the fourth period as the Bears pushed their lead to 11-5 with 9:26 left. The Panthers scored their last goal a minute later for the 11-6 final.
The Bears held a +5 ground balls margin and a +1 face-off wins edge.
NYIT brings the 2014 regular-season to a close on Friday, April 25 on the road at Post University. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
