RIT Stuns D-II No. 5 Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The RIT men's lacrosse team opened the 2009 campaign in exciting fashion, defeating #5 Adelphi University 12-11 on Friday afternoon. The Panthers jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first quarter but were outscored 10-5 by the Tigers over the final three quarters to earn their first win of the season. Freshman A.J. Tingle (Cary, NC/Green Hope) scored the game-winning goal with 1:01 remaining in the fourth quarter for RIT.

Adelphi jumped out to a 3-0 advantage early in the first quarter with two goals by Matthew Sagistano and one by Kevin Kemp. Chris Cherami (Olwick, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) broke the run with his first goal of the season, cutting the Panthers lead to 3-1.

Adelphi ran off three more goals and led 6-1 late in the quarter before Sean Gillies (Oakville, ON/Albany Academy) made it 6-2 with 1:01 remaining with assist going to Kelso Davis.

The Tigers got back into the game with a five-goal run in the second quarter, tying the score at 6-6 on an unassisted goal by Tingle.

Adam Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) began the run early in the quarter with an unassisted goal at 13:19. Adam Lehmann (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) cut the lead to 6-4 with an even-strength goal at 9:49 of the second.

Sean Gillies and Tingle each scored tying the game at 6-6 late in the quarter. Then, with RIT on a man-up Cody Schroeder-Young (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) gave the Tigers their first lead of the game at 7-6 with four seconds remaining in the half.

Schroeder-Young made it 8-7 early in the third quarter with his second goal of the game. Adelphi ran off two straight goals, tying the score at 8-8 on a goal by Ian Kuchta.

Billy Walton (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) gave RIT the lead back with 2:37 remaining in the third quarter on his first goal of the afternoon.

The Panthers scored with 34 second to go in the third, tying the score at 9-9 and setting up an exciting fourth quarter.

The game went back and forth in the final quarter until by Paul Bendetto and Donny Moss gave Adelphi a two goal lead with 8:14 remaining in the game.

With 2:42 left in regulation, RIT's David Burke (Fairport, NY) scored off an Adelphi failed clear to put the Tigers within one at 11-10. Kelso Davis scooped up a loose ball with 2:11 remaining in regulation and scored his first of the game tying the score at 11-11.

That set up the game-winner by Tingle. He scored off a miscue by the Adelphi defense with 1:01 remaining in the game.

A shot by Eddie Ege with twelve seconds remaining was turned aside by Kevin Rattigan (Chicago, IL/Western Reserve Academy) to preserve the win for the Tigers. He picked up his first win of the season finishing with 10 saves.

RIT out shot Adelphi 46-30 and were led by Tingle, Schroeder-Young and Gillies ho each had a pair of goals.

The Panthers held a 48-29 edge in ground balls and won 21-of-26 face-offs. The Tigers went 1-for-10 on man-up and held Adelphi to 3-for-7 with the man-advantage.

RIT will face York College on Monday, March 2 at 1 pm at Sylvan Lake Park in Sanford, Florida.
