OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Sophomore Jimmy Dailey
(Westminster/Winter Hills) and junior Richie Ford
(Baltimore/Towson) each scored four goals to lead the No. 7-ranked
Stevenson University men's lacrosse team to a 16-6 victory over No.
2 Gettysburg Wednesday afternoon at Caves Athletics Complex.
After achieving the school's highest-ever ranking on Monday, the Mustangs (3-0) equaled their scoring output from the first two games combined while totaling 44 shots and holding a 27-19 edge in ground balls.
The win is the first for Stevenson against a team ranked in the top five nationally since a 10-9 victory over No. 3 Cortland State on Feb. 24, 2007.
Dailey, who tied his career-high in goals, also added three assists to finish with seven points, three shy of his career-high of 10 set in a 16-6 victory over Mary Washington on April 17, 2007 when he had three goals and seven assists.
Dailey and Ford combined to score four of Stevenson's six first quarter goals as it led 6-2 after one and 10-2 at the half.
Gettysburg (1-1) took a 2-1 lead in the game's first four minutes after back-to-back goals by Josh Reichert and Danno Lynch just 1:07 apart.
Unphased, the Mustangs scored the next 10 consecutive goals, including three in a span of 1:07 to end the first quarter.
Dailey scored or assisted on five of Stevenson's first eight goals while picking up an assist on the eventual game-winner by senior Greg Furshman (Miami, Fla./Towson) just 21 seconds into the second quarter.
Furshman finished the game with one goal and one assist, won 11 of 17 faceoffs and totaled six ground balls in the second match-up against his brother Zach who is the starting goalie for the Bullets. A year ago, Greg had a goal in a 10-9 loss at Gettysburg, but Zach did not see any action.
Ford had a season-high five points for the Mustangs with senior Nic Bevacqua (Booton Township, N.J./Mt. Lakes) adding three goals and junior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) totaling two goals and two assists.
Stevenson's starting attack of Dailey, Ford and Kazimer finished with 10 goals and six assists while the midfield of Furshman and senior Brett Yoder (Parkton/Herford) added two goals and three assists.
After totaling a career-high 12 saves in the team's 9-7 win at No. 15 Stevens on Saturday, junior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) made 10 against the Bullets before giving way to senior Eric Fleegle (Easton/St. Peter & Paul) for the final three minutes.
Reichert had three goals to lead Gettysburg while Tom O'Donnell and Zach Pucci added two points each.
Stevenson looks to continue its six-game regular season win streak on Saturday when it travels to Ursinus.
