No. 9 Shoremen Top McDaniel in OT

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Senior midfielder Matt Moreton (Darnestown, MD/Northwest) scored the game-winning goal with 2:28 left in overtime as ninth-ranked Washington College defeated host McDaniel College, 9-8, in a Centennial Conference men's lacrosse game this afternoon in Westminster, MD.

The Shoremen (7-1, 2-0 Centennial) broke an early 2-2 tie as sophomore midfielder Doug Herdegen (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) scored a pair of unassisted goal with 7:14 and 2:46 remaining in the first quarter, respectively. Senior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) scored the only goal of the second quarter with 9:33 on the clock when he fired in a tally off an assist from senior defenseman Patrick Healy (Simsbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) to give the Shoremen a 5-2 advantage at halftime. The assist was the first of Healy's collegiate career.

Sophomore attackman Shane Kaski (Richmond, VA/Midlothian) extended the lead to 6-2 with an unassisted goal with 14:34 remaining in the third quarter. The Green Terror (5-2, 0-1) quickly responded as Gibbs Preston scored off a Jeb Barnes assist with 12:51 on the clock and then returned the favor the Barnes with 11:27 to play in the third to trim the lead to 6-4.
Kielek fed sophomore attackman Josh Perlow (Owings Mills, MD/Boys Latin) for an extra-man goal with 7:13 remaining in the third to temporarily stem the Green Terror's push and extend the to 7-4. D.J. Rickels cut the lead back to two goals with a goal off an assist from Bill Warner with 56 seconds remaining in the third quarter to make it 7-5.

The Green Terror pulled to within a goal when Preston opened the fourth-quarter scoring off an assist from Matt Mummert with 11:17 on the clock and knotted the score at 7-7 as Mike Hatton scored an unassisted goal one minute later. Hatton continued the Green Terror run with another unassisted goal with 6:57 left in regulation to give McDaniel an 8-7 lead.

The Shoremen tied the score at 8-8 with 2:24 left in the fourth when Herdegen scored off an assist from junior attackman Brendan O'Leary (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck). Washington got off three shots in the final 75 seconds of regulation, but could not break the tie as the game went into overtime. Moreton's overtime game-winner came on the third shot of the extra session, all of them by the Shoremen.

Herdegen led Washington with three goals in the game, while Perlow and Moreton each had two. Kielek had a goal and two assists, while Kaski also finished with one goal.

Preston scored two goals and assisted on two others for the Green Terror. Hatton scored two goals, while Barnes and Warner each finished with one goal and one assist.

Senior goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 10 saves in the win for the Shoremen, while Kenny McHugh made an identical amount for McDaniel in the loss. Senior midfielder Thayer Damm (Huntingdon Valley, PA/LaSalle) went 13-for-20 on face-offs for Washington, scooping up 13 ground balls.

The Shoremen, who held a 40-32 advantage in shots in the game, return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Ursinus.
