Cabrini Sprints Away from Montclair State
from press releases
RADNOR, Pa. - The No. 15 Cabrini men's lacrosse team has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 17-3 victory against Montclair State University Wednesday at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The win is the Cavaliers' third in the NCAA Tournament since the 2003 season.
Junior attackman Casey Grugan (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) sparked the Cavaliers' offense with five points on four goals and one assist. Grugan's one helper increased his 2009 total to 44, passing Athletic Hall of Fame honoree Tom Lemieux's 2002 performance and setting a new single-season program record.
Grugan also extended the nation's second-longest consecutive points streak to 56 games. He has recorded at least one point in each game of his Cabrini career.
Sophomore midfielder Paul Skulski (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) also recorded five points, pairing two goals with three assists. Senior attackman Scott Reimer (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West), the Cavaliers' all-time leader in points (254) and goals (231), notched four points on four goals.
Senior midfielder Kevin Fahey (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) and freshman attackman Brian Hill (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) each tallied two points on one goal and one assist.
Cabrini owned a 44-29 advantage in groundballs. Senior Jeff Moore (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), the program's all-time leader (210), led the Cavaliers' efforts with five groundballs.
Behind Fahey and senior Mike Dolente (Phoenixville, Pa./Spring-Ford), the Blue & White controlled the face-off circle, winning 17-of-23 attempts. Dolente went a staggering 11-for-12 at the X. Fahey posted six wins in nine tries.
Senior goalkeeper Kevin Chenoweth (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) played all 60 minutes against the Red Hawks, totaling 11 saves and earning his 15th win of the season.
The Cavaliers led just 2-0 at the end of the first quarter following an unassisted marker from Grugan and a score from senior Christian Burrows (Wayne, Pa./The Woodlynde School) off a feed from Hill.
The Blue & White held a 6-1 advantage at the intermission. Grugran struck first in the second quarter with a goal at the 7:09 mark. He concluded the first half's scoring with a goal at the 3:38 mark.
Grugan's last goal of the second quarter triggered a 9-0 run from the Cavaliers, racing to a 14-1 cushion with 13:51 remaining in the contest.
Montclair State deposited two unanswered goals mid-way through the fourth period. However, Cabrini closed out the game with three straight scores, including Skulski's second.
Sophomore attackman Tyler Meth led the Red Hawks with two points on one goal and one assist. Senior goalkeeper Thomas Bowers claimed 17 saves in the loss. Montclair State was making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament all-time.
The Cavaliers' 17 goals is a program record in an NCAA Tournament game, surpassing last season's 13-score output against local rival Haverford College in the second round.
Cabrini will play in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season Saturday at No. 1 Stevenson University. Game time is to be announced.
