Hayes Named UMF's Interim Coach
from press release
FARMINGTON, Maine -- University of Maine at
Farmington alum Jon Hayes '97 has been named the UMF interim men's
lacrosse and men's soccer coach for the spring of 2011.
"We are very pleased to be able to bring Jon on board to provide leadership and continuity for our programs," said UMF Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation Julie Davis. "Jon brings us a wealth of collegiate sport experience and he knows us well. He'll provide the enthusiasm and structure needed for the men's lacrosse season which is upon us as well as a point of contact and direction for the men's soccer program during their off-season. In short, I am confident he will serve to bridge the gap for both teams and we are fortunate to have him work with us in this capacity."
Currently an assistant coach for the Thomas College men's basketball program, Hayes will serve as interim coach for both programs this spring. Simultaneously, a national search for a men's lacrosse and men's soccer head coach will be conducted. He brings more than a decade of coaching experience in intercollegiate athletics.
"I am excited to help out the UMF athletics program and the student-athletes through this transition," said Hayes.
Hayes recently returned to Maine after a stint in Washington as the assistant coach of the Whitworth University men's basketball team. He has also previously served as men's basketball head coach and event management coordinator at the University of New England and as a men's basketball assistant coach at the University of Maine, Colorado School of Mines, UMF and Hamilton College.
A Farmington native, Hayes played lacrosse at Mt. Blue High School and Bates College before transferring to UMF. He graduated from UMF in 1997 with a bachelor of arts degree in history.
A national search for a men's soccer and men's lacrosse head coach is under way.
