NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team opened their home schedule tonight with an 11-5 win over Southwestern University. The Captains were led by John Glaser (Cincinnati, OH) and Rob Koster (Vienna, Va.) with three goals apiece.
The Captains struck first with the lone goal of the first quarter from Matt Shaw (Landsdale, Pa.) with the assist going to Matt Gleisner (Greensboro, NC). The Pirates and Captains traded goals in the second quarter with three going to the Captains and two to the Pirates. Glaser was a part of each goal, scoring two and getting the assist on Koster's first goal of the game. Edward Williams and Gus Brunger got the goals for Southwestern.
Southwestern struck first in the second half bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of CNU. The Captains then scored three straight to go up 7-4. Scoring was Kyle Pasta (Hampstead, Md.), Shaw and Glaser.
Williams picked up his second goal of the game for the Pirates with just 37 seconds left in the quarter and then scored again three minutes into the fourth quarter to bring them to within two. But the rest of the quarter belonged to the Captains as they scored four straight to end the game 11-5. Scoring were Gleisner, Pasta and Koster with two.
Greg Basch (Rochester, N.Y.) went 16 for 20 in faceoffs and led the team in ground balls with eight. Chase Walton (Burke, Va.) had four caused turnovers for the Captains and added an assist.
The Captains outshot the Pirates 61 to 16 and also led with 48 ground balls to the Pirates' 21.
Andy McGregor (Springfield, Va.) made four saves for the Captains and picked up his second win of the season.
The win improved the Captains to 2-0. They return to action as they host the University of Mary Washington on March 6 at 1:00 pm.
