from press release

ROCHESTER, N.Y.
- The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team cruised to a 16-7 win over visiting SUNY Geneseo on Monday afternoon.

With the win, Fisher, who moved up two spots to 15 in the latest national coaches poll, improves to 7-0, while Geneseo, who was ranked 18th last week, drops to 2-3.

Fisher outscored Geneseo 13-2 over the game's final 39 minutes. The Cardinals out-shot Geneseo 42-17 and finished with a 40-11 advantage in ground balls. Senior Erich Rassow dominated the X yet again, and was 21-of-26 on faceoffs.

Fisher jumped out to the early 1-0 lead with All-American Kyle Denhoff scoring off a pass from Mitch Ritchie just 41 seconds into the game.

The Cardinals led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, but Geneseo scored the next three goals – all of which came in a 37-second span to take a 4-2 lead.

Geneseo led 5-3 with 9:27 left in the half, but the Cardinals came storming back and scored the next four goals, all of which came from different players, to give Fisher the 7-5 lead at the half.

The Blue Knights pulled to within a goal at 7-6 on a man-up situation just over two minutes into the second half. Fisher answered though with two man-up goals of its own. Ritchie made it 8-6, scoring off a great pass from freshman Michael Utz, while Utz pushed Fisher's lead to 9-6 with 9:35 remaining in third.

Just nine seconds later, after Erich Rassow won the faceoff, Connor Henderson assisted on his second straight goal, with Ritchie recording the hat-trick, making it 10-6 and the Cardinals never looked back.

Ritchie tallied a career-high six points on three goals and three assists. Denhoff finished with five points on four goals and one assist, while Henderson (three goals, two assists) finished with five points.

Eric Klein and Utz both scored twice, while Mike Cummins and Jeff Wester also scored. Cummins and Rassow both totaled a team-high nine ground balls. Ryan Schmidt chipped in with two assists.

Matt McShea stopped three shots to earn the win in goal.

Fisher will return to action next Wednesday at Ithaca College in the Empire 8 Conference season opener for both teams. Fourth-seeded Ithaca ended top-seeded Fisher's season last year, posting a 12-11 win over the Cardinals in the semifinals of the 2010 Empire 8 Championship.
