from press release
BRUNSWICK, Maine – Devin Acton '14 (Sudbury, MA) scored five goals and Sam Jakimo '12 (Woodbury, NY) made 16 saves to lead the 20th-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team to a 13-10 win over Bowdoin College Saturday afternoon.
The Jeffs' fifth-straight win improves them to 5-1 overall this season (2-1 NESCAC), while the Polar Bears fall to 2-3 (0-3 NESCAC). Amherst is off to its best start since the 2008 squad won its first five games.
Acton had an assist in addition to his five scores, while Aaron Mathias '14 (Ridgefield, CT) pitched in three goals as well for the visitors. Bowdoin was led by three goals from Ben Chadwick and two apiece from Franklin Reis, Billy Bergner and Patrick Lawlor.
With Amherst leading 5-4 early in the third quarter, the Jeffs rolled off a crucial 5-1 run over a 12-minute span—sparked by three goals from Acton—to increase their lead to 10-5. Amherst used a 3-1 spurt midway through the fourth quarter to push its advantage to six goals (13-7) with just 5:36 to play. Bowdoin added a trio of late scores to make it a 13-10 final.
Jake McCampbell made 10 saves in net for the Polar Bears, who held a 36-35 edge in shots and 16-9 advantage in faceoffs.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action Tuesday, Mar. 29, when they head to Wheaton College for a 4:30 p.m. game.
