Trio of Tricks Lift Ithaca Over No. 12 Fisher

from press release

ITHACA, N.Y.
- Three Bombers tallied hat tricks to lead the #25 Ithaca men's lacrosse team (5-1, 1-0 Empire 8) past #12 St. John Fisher (7-1, 0-1 Empire 8), 11-8, in its Empire 8 opener on Wednesday at Higgins Stadium.

The Bombers, who improved their all-time series record over the Cardinals to 14-1, jumped out to a commanding 7-1 lead before taking a five-goal advantage into intermission. The Cardinals opened the second half with a pair of scores, but Ithaca answered to make it 8-4 with 19 minutes of play remaining in the game. St. John Fisher again managed back-to-back goals, before Ithaca rattled off three consecutive to put the game out of reach. The Cardinals claimed two scores in the final minute of action to finalize all scoring at 11-8.

Sophomore Andrew Bruce (De La Salle/Lafayette, Calif.) set a career-high and seniors Jay Lucas (Fox Lane/Bedford Hills) and Michael Silipo (Williston Northampton/Deerfield, Mass.) tied career-best performances as each netted a trio of goals for the Bombers. Lucas also dished out a game-best two assists, while junior Devin Weinshank (Long Beach/Long Beach) chipped in a goal and an assist.

Senior David Gal (Loomis Chafee (Conn.)/Amherst, Mass.) recorded his third straight win in goal for the Bombers, and fifth of the season, as he turned away 10 Cardinal shots. He also collected a game-best seven ground balls, while sophomore Marc Roberts (Hendrick Hudson/Montrose) forced a game- and career-high four turnovers.

Silipo went unassisted on back-to-back goals in the first stint to open all scoring before St. John Fisher brought the game to 2-1 with 58 seconds left in the period.

Bruce kicked-off a flurry of Ithaca goals at 14:08 in the second, before Lucas went unassisted at 11:56. Senior Ryan Lowe (Fairport/Fairport) then bounced a shot into the inside of the crossbar to make it a 5-1 game. Lucas again capitalized on the Cardinal defense, driving left for the Bombers' fourth consecutive, before freshman Jake Long (Upper Dublin/Ft. Washington, Pa.) fed Silipo for a man-up goal at 8:26 to solidify a 7-1 Ithaca gap.

St. John Fisher scored three straight, one to end the half at 7-2, before opening the third stanza with a duo of goals. Ithaca netted just one of the third period's five scores when Lucas went unassisted at the four-minute mark.

With an 8-6 edge entering the final frame, Ithaca scored three back-to-back for an 11-6 lead. Lucas fed Bruce at 13:00 and Weinshank at 8:27, before Weinshank found Bruce for a score at 7:11. The Bombers held St. John Fisher scoreless over the next six minutes before the visitors tallied two late goals for an 11-8 final.

Ithaca, who narrowly outshot St. John Fisher, 33-29, has defeated three of its last four nationally-ranked opponents dating back to the 2010 season.

Ithaca will conclude its four-game home stand on Saturday, April 2 at 3 p.m. against Union.
