from press release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
– Head coach Keith Bugbee won his 300th career game as he led the Springfield College men's lacrosse to a 21-4 win over Mass. Maritime in Pilgrim Lacrosse League action on a rainy Stagg Field on Saturday afternoon.

The victory improves Springfield's record to 8-5, including a 4-0 mark in league play. The Buccaneers drop to 3-12, 0-4 in conference action.

History was made in the contest as Bugbee became just the seventh coach in NCAA men's lacrosse history to reach 300 career victories. In his 28th season on the sidelines for the Pride, Bugbee owns a 300-144 record. Other than Salisbury's Jim Berkman and Gettysburg's Hank Janczyk, Bugbee is just the third Division III coach to reach the milestone.

Springfield dominated the game statistically, holding a 58-9 advantage in shots and a 59-42 edge in ground balls. Springfield won 20-of-28 draws at the face-off "X", while Mass. Maritime committed 41 turnovers on the afternoon.

Both Shane Ferguson and Harry Bernstein totaled three goals and two assists, while Eric Balslov added two goals and two helpers. Max Wildes and Jarrid Johnson each tallied hat tricks, and Ryon Lynch dished out three helpers. Mark Eaton was a dominant force at the "X", winning 11-of-14 draws and scooping up 12 ground balls. Robert Maher earned the win in goal as he posted two saves in the first half.

Four different players scored for the visiting Bucanners as Jake Bickley, Chris Davis, Austin Waldron, and Chris Bergau found the back of the cage. Will Doucette and Jack Murphy each tallied six ground balls, with Doucette winning 7-of-22 draws. Murphy played well in the first half despite taking the loss as he made 11 saves while allowing 12 goals. Paul Painten made three saves and surrendered nine goals in the second 30 minutes of play.

Springfield jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back to start the contest. After Bernstein opened up the scoring on a feed from Matt Hudson at the 11:33 mark, Springfield strung together four tallies in a 2:44 span, capped off by another Bernstein goal to force a Mass. Maritime timeout with a 2:50 left in the first quarter.

Bickley finally scored the visitors first marker with 10 seconds remaining in the opening quarter on a great finish after his shot slipped inside the near post.

Springfield opened up the second quarter with five straight markers, including two from Ferguson, as the Pride opened up a 10-1 advantage. Mass. Maritime added its second goal of the game on just its third shot after Davis stuffed home a shot on the crease on a nice look from James Burns. Wildes pumped in two strikes in the final two minutes of the half as Springfield headed into the half with a 12-2 lead.

Austin Orsini found the back of the net 50 seconds into the third before Waldron raced the length of the field and ripped home a goal with a longstick just under a minute later. The Pride strung together the next three goals of the game, including a man-up marker from Ferguson at the 5:32 mark as the lead grew to 16-3. Bergau answered with the Bucs final goal of the afternoon on a nice individual effort 44 seconds later.

Springfield tallied the final five goals of the afternoon, including two from Johnson and a terrific behind-the-back strike from Jon Santer, en route to the 21-4 victory.
